Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist battled an 11-year addiction to Placidyl, according to FBI declassified documents released this week. 

Rehnquist was hooked on the sleeping pill from 1970 to 1981. Highly toxic, Placidyl - street named "pickles," "greeny meanies" and "jelly bellies" - was discontinued in 1999 by Abbott Laboratories.

An investigation launched in 1985 during nomination hearings for Chief Justice revealed that Rehnquist was hospitalized in 1981 for his dependence on Placidyl, which he took for back pain.

While withdrawing from the drug at George Washington University Hospital, the Associate Justice hallucinated and tried to escape. He experienced a "disturbance in mental clarity." 

A staunch conservative, Rehnquist replaced John Marshall Harlan II on the bench in 1972. The Nixon and Reagan nominee succeeded Warren Burger as Chief Justice in 1986. Rehnquist remained on the bench until he died on Sept. 3, 2005 at the age of 80. He was succeeded by John Roberts.

Current Associate Justice Clarence Thomas admitted to having smoked marijuana in nomination hearings in 1991.
