Thursday, 21 June 2007 13:22

The greatest stoner movie of all time is also the 84th best American movie ever, according to he American Film Institute (AFI). SEE TRAILER BELOW

Easy RiderReleased in 1969, Easy Rider stars Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper (he also directed it) as stoners who hit the road on their Harleys and end up on a collision course with America's moral majority. In one of the film's famous scenes, George Hanson (played by Jack Nicholson in a breakout supporting role) smokes pot for the first time with Wyatt (Fonda) and Billy (Hopper). After George is murdered, Wyatt and Billy head to New Orleans, stopping at a hippie commune along the way.

In New Orleans, they trip out on LSD with Karen (Karen Black) and Mary (Toni Basil) in a cemetary. Triva alert: Phil Spector, simply known as "The Connection," delivers a package of coke to Billy in the opening scene.

AFI's list includes several other movies with drug themes and pot scenes - Apocalypse Now (#30), Annie Hall (#35), Platoon (#86) and Pulp Fiction (#94).

"Easy Rider" is among the 500-plus movies reviewed in "Reefer Movie Madness: The Ultimate Stoner Film Guide" Shirley Halperin and CelebStoner's Steve Bloom. Pre-order the book here.
