Dr. Drew Pinsky, host of VH1's reality series, Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, repeatedly referred to marijuana as addictive and difficut to stop using during the show's opening season, which featured actress Jaimee Foxworth as the group's resident pothead. Here's anexcerpt from an audiocast produced by WebMD in 2005: Moderator: What do you think about marijuana abuse? Dr. Drew: I have mixed feelings about it [pot]. From a clinician's perspective, I'm against it in the sense that whatever I can use to create structure to help addicts maintain sobriety. However, in a more pragmatic reality, I think we're fueling an agenda that prevents people from having a rational discussion about it. I think it's addictive for a small subset of alcoholics. It's hard to have a discussion about it rationally. I think we should almost legalize it and then have a rational discussion about it. General prohibition doesn't seem to work. There should be no moral issues infused in these, it should be based on the clinical realities. Also see: More CelebStoner News

I completely agree. Many people in our society hear the word "marijuana" and because there's this huge moral taboo, they don't even bother to look at scientific facts of the matter. Immediately, it's "oh god, it's a MIND-ALTERING SUBSTANCE and it must be HORRIBLE!!" And yet alcohol, despite being just as (though in a different way) intoxicating and much more dangerous for one's health, is legal and acceptable (up to the point of alcoholism and drunk driving, but that is the fault of the individual). Marijuana CAN be the same way--used irresponsibly and followed by negative consequences, but once again, it's all dependent upon the individual using the substance, his/her motivations for using it, and how much/how often it's used. ANYTHING can be bad for you if used to excess; it's a matter of moderation.
