Pineapple Express co-stars Seth Rogen and James Franco smoked a joint on-stage at the MTV Movie Awards on June 1, 2008. Apparently, this was in the script, but at the last minute MTV tried to pull the plug on the stony skit. Too late. According to one report, "The sweet scent wafting through the Gibson Ampitheatre suggested the herb was real." About the stunt, Franco said, "MTV wrote it!... Then backstage there was this big commotion: 'You guys can't say that.' It says right in the script: 'Lights fake joint.'" Cameras initially stayed with the duo as they puffed and passed the joint back and forth. But in replays, cameras pulled away so you couldn't see the action on stage. Rogen's PR rep says the joint was fake. Afterwords, with people still wondering if the weed was real or not, Rogen told Pot Culture's Shirley Halperin: "Good, that means it worked."
Here's the transcript: Rogen: We're here to present the award for Best Summer Movie So Far - whatever in the world that means. Franco: MTV said only two potheads like us would be crazy enough to present such a ridiculous award. Rogen: In reality, we aren't potheads at all. We don't even smoke weed in real life. Franco: Exactly. Like on the set of Pineapple Express, we didn't even smoke. It was all fake weed. Rogen: It was. It was like this huge bag of weed right here. [Picks up ounce size bag of pot and shows it to the audience] This is not weed. Franco: [Takes joint out of pocket] Or this huge fatty joint right here isn't actually a huge fatty joint. Rogen: [Takes lighter out of pocket] And this lighter is not a real lighter. [Lights joint in Franco's mouth, crowd cheers] Franco: [Inhales] And he didn't really light that joint. [Passes to Rogen] Rogen: [Inhales] And we're realy not smoking a big, fatty joint from this giant bag of fake weed on live television right this second. [Inhales again, coughs] Franco: And this isn't really good shit, man [shit bleeped out] Rogen: It isn't really good weed at all. It's totally fake. Franco: And so, kids, don't really smoke fake weed like this. Former drug addict Robert Downey Jr. followed Rogen and Franco on stage. "Thanks fellas for that intoxicating introduction," the Iron Man star quipped. Also see:
