Colts Boot Johnson After Pot Arrest PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 10 September 2008 21:46

Just a day after being arrested for marijuana possession and cited for speeding, Indianapolis Colts defensive lineman Ed Johnson was waived by the team - meaning fired for weed. Johnson already had a bad-boy rep for being suspended when he attended Penn St. He's the sixth NFL player arrested for drugs in this year.

Ed Johnson mug shot Johnson's Mercedes was stopped for speeding (72 mph in a 55 zone) in Hamilton County north of Indianapolis just past midniight on Sept. 10, 2008. When police smelled pot, they searched the car with K-9 assistance and found an "undisclosed amount of marijuana in the center console." Johnson was charged with misdemeanor possession and cited for speeding, and then released on bond from Hamilton County Jail.

The Colts showed little concern for Johnson, who started the team's last 17 regular season games. "He was repeatedly told this during the offseason,'' team president Bill Polian stated. "Along with his teammates, he was reminded as recently as [Tuesday] of coach Dungy's rules of behavior. Unfortunately, he chose to violate those rules. Given the circumstances surrounding Ed's original employment with the Colts... we have no choice but to take this action.''

Can teams cut players after a drug offense, before legal cases are resolved? Apparently so. Two other recent NFL bustees - Jameel Cook and Willie Andrews - have been waived since their arrests.

"As in any other incident of this nature, it will be reviewed under the league's substance abuse policy," the NFL stated. "A player's prior history can be considered in evaluating potential discipline under the program."

On May 5, 2009, the Colts reinstated Johnson.
