1. Pineapple Express Seth Rogen’s pot flick (he co-wrote it and co-starred) flexed its muscles at the box office to the tune of $87.4 million – a huge success by stoner-movie standards. Rogen and James Franco played stoners who got caught up in an increasingly violent caper. Pineapple Express review Watch the trailer Watch cross-joint scene 2. Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay Kal Penn and John Cho returned as the loveable high-IQ stoners. More political than its predecessor, it also scored better at the box office ($38.1). The G.W. Bush scene was the highlight. Harold & Kumar review Watch the trailer 3. Super High Me Comedian Doug Benson smoked a shitload of pot for 30 consecutive days after going weed-free for the previous month. The results were both enlightening and high-larious. Benson recruited buds like Sarah Silverman and Brian Posehn for cameos. Super High Me review Watch the trailer 4. The Wackness Despite a nice push by Sony Pictures Classics, it earned just $2.2 at the box office. Josh Peck dealt pot in New York circa 1994. One of clients was Sir Ben Kingsley, who took prodigious bong hits. The Wackness review Watch the trailer 5. Humboldt County A grower story set in Northern California, Magnolia Pictures picked up this indie at SXSW. Director/writers Darren Grodsky and Danny Jacobs shined a light on the county’s cannabis history and eccentric characters. Humboldt County review Watch the trailer 6. Smiley Face Like a female Tommy Chong, Anna Faris mumbled her way through Greg Araki’s stoner flick. After munching down a plate of pot cupcakes, she attempted to attend a hemp rally in Venice. Along the way, Faris hung out with Harold & Kumar's John Cho and The Office's John Krasinski. Smiley Face review 7. Rachel Getting Married Fresh out of rehab, Anne Hathaway barged into her sister’s wedding creating conflicts. Jonathan Demme’s family psychodrama was full of surprises, sharp performances and quality music. 8. American Drug War Kevin Booth’s powerful documentary told the story of Ricky Ross and indicted the Prohibition that created crack kingpins like him. Released on DVD in 2007, Showtime aired it throughout 2008. Watch the trailer 9. Garden Party Los Angeles was the setting for this offbeat story about a pot-growing realtor, a wannabe rock star and a sleazy photographer. It co-starred Gossip Girl’s Willa Holland and Mad Men’s Patrick Fischler. Garden Party review Watch the trailer 10. Strange Wilderness Not the best effort from Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions, it raked in $6.6 million at the box office. Steve Zahn headed a wacky cast (Jonah Hill, Allen Covert, Justin Long, Peter Dante, Kevin Heffernan) that went off in search of Bigfoot. Strange Wilderness review Watch the trailer Honorable Mention: Milk, Religulous, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Zach & Miri Make a Porno, Chicago 10, U2-3D, Charlie Bartlett, Semi-Pro, Hell on Wheels, Tulia Texas, Chapter 27, Shine a Light, Get Smart, Gonzo: The Life & Work of Dr. Hunter S.
