Obama on Marijuana Legalization PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 26 March 2009 16:43

In an unusual Town Hall format, Pres. Obama fielded the most popular questions sent to the White House website. Marijuana was No. 1 on the list.

“I have to say that there was one question that was voted on that ranked fairly high, and that was whether legalizing marijuana would improve the economy and job creation... I don't know what that says about the online audience," he joked.

“We want to make sure that it was answered. The answer is, no, I don't think that is a good strategy to grow our economy.”

One of the first activist reponses comes from Jack Cole, executive director of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP). He tells CelebStoner: "Despite the president's flippant comments today, the grievous harms of marijuana prohibition are no laughing matter. Certainly, the 800,000 people arrested last year on marijuana charges find nothing funny about it, nor do the millions of Americans struggling in this sluggish economy. It would be an enormous economic stimulus if we stopped wasting so much money arresting and locking people up for non-violent drug offenses and instead brought in new tax revenue from legal sales, just as we did when we ended alcohol prohibition 75 years ago during the Great Depression."

Does it need to donkey punch Obama in the face for him to realize what he is passing up?
What boosted the New World back in the early days of settlers, the sell of Tobacco. Now, cigarrettes KILL! Alcohol, can KILL! MARIJUANA, lets smile. Yes, there are other issues out there. Yes, he's only human but being a hypocrit is a problem. All you hear now-a-days, is stand up for what you beleive in. Obama, yeah your the President, set an example and lead. If you feel MARIJUANA should be legalized, stand by it, but dont go back on your word and mock the people who put you in office. GROW SOME BALLS BARRACK HUSSEIN OBAMA.

what is that cause many people assume that marijuana was made illegal through some kind of process involving scientific, medical, and government hearings; that it was to protect the citizens from what was determined to be a dangerous drug.

The actual story shows a much different picture. Those who voted on the legal fate of this plant never had the facts, but were dependent on information supplied by those who had a specific agenda to deceive lawmakers. You'll see below that the very first federal vote to prohibit marijuana was based entirely on a documented lie on the floor of the Senate.

You'll also see that the history of marijuana's criminalization is filled with:

Racism
Fear
Protection of Corporate Profits
Yellow Journalism
Ignorant, Incompetent, and/or Corrupt Legislators
Personal Career Advancement and Greed
befor you say no again think about it. "your own country is saying "YES" that should ring some sort of bell.

I respect Obama he is a talented politician, President Obama seems to posse’s insightful, reasonable judgment on many issues, although in the case of marijuana prohibition laws I find Obama’s choice to answer with mocking humor to be lacking. Smoking marijuana is an easy thing to laugh about, it seems there is something about being stoned that brings a smile to people’s faces, however marijuana prohibition is not a joke. We should not be making jokes as millions of Americans are arrested for being caught on the wrong side of moral politicking, we should not laugh as we spend over 30 billion dollars a year going after Americans for smoking weed, we should not giggle and poke fun as we watch billions of dollars in tax revenue slip through our fingers each year, and should we not be jolly as thousands of people are murdered by cartels profiting from America’s moral hypocrisy. I believe there are profound latent consequences in prohibition that are not even factored in to our assessments of the effects of illegality, such as how we view the rule of law and the role of law enforcement in the community, the divisiveness between users and non users, the stigma of mental shock of incarceration. I say pot prohibition is no joke it has real costs paid for in real lives. Freedom is achieved in a country by placing responsibility in the hands of the citizen and not by the state legally enforcing morality.

First he puts more military troops in Afghanistan, then mocks the legalization of pot. These are the reasons I voted for him. No more war and end prohibition. Obama has let me down and appears to have sold out to the right.

WHY IS HE GOING BACK ON HIS WORD.

I'll say it again. IF YOU HAVE NO EXPERIENCE, YOU DO NOT KNOW, WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.

(Oh, and I'm all for legalisation, btw. I just think there are more important issues. What good is legal pot if all your scientists are incompetent and can't find work? Synchronium THE NARROW MINDED)

IF YOU REALLY KNEW ANYTHING ABOUT... CANNABIS/MARIJUANA.
WE WOULDN'T BE HAVING THIS CONVERSATION.

BECAUSE YOU MY FRIEND WOULD BE INSIDE THE CIRCLE, INSTEAD OF OUTSIDE. YOU CAN NOT UNDERSTAND UNTIL YOU PUT YOURSELF IN SOMEONE ELSES SHOES. THIS IS SOMEONES MEDICINE.

HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY

PS: CANNABIS, HELPS PEOPLE MAKE THE RIGHT DECISIONS. IT ALSO MAKE ONE FEEL MORE CONFIDENT WHEN FEELING DEPRESSED. :)

Yeah, science we'll get to do stem cell research in order to find a treatment for the next wave of cancers contracted from the "safe" nukes but we won't be able to obtain weed to treat the side effects . Maybe you think that pot advocates are simply a bunch of whiners.
I guess that the people who fought for the voters rights act were a bunch of uppity
niggers.
thanks Dave Green

I'm just saying there's a lot more to being a president than this one issue.

Cancers from "safe" nukes? What the heck are you on? Is that your fully formed opinion on what stem cells have to offer? I guess the degradation of dopaminergic neurones in the nigro-striatal pathway that lead to Parkinson's disease isn't important?

Besides, the second generation of anti-emetics used to treat chemotherapy-induced nausea & vomiting (ie palonosetron) are about 40% better than the first generation of drugs. Certainly better for treating the side effects than cannabis.

Oh, and I'm all for legalisation, btw. I just think there are more important issues. What good is legal pot if all your scientists are incompetent and can't find work?

I found this analysis on StopTheDrugWar.org:

"As lame as these responses are, you can bet he'd never have said anything at all if marijuana questions hadn’t repeatedly pulled the most votes on his website. There's a subtle and revealing undertone to all of this insofar as Obama has publicly declined to actually challenge the merits of our argument in any way.

For all of the stereotypical anti-pot talking points at his disposal, Obama chooses to take the softer path of pushing the matter aside as best he can and moving on. Is that because he can't refute our arguments, he doesn't want to, or both? I'm operating under the assumption that 1) Obama privately agrees with us, but remains concerned about the political consequences of associating himself with that viewpoint, and 2) Obama has enough respect for the potency of our movement that he doesn't want to piss us off any more than he has to.

As frustrating as all of this is, we'd be foolish to miss the significance of our success at strong-arming the reform argument into a high profile discussion of the economy. It's not everyday that a sitting president is forced to comment on the legalization of marijuana. The fact that this even happened means we're doing something right."

I concur. I was really mad when I first saw his reaction. I felt like our voices, of the people who worked so hard to get him into office were being not only ignored, but ridiculed.... but the more I think about it, the more I feel like he is still open to our arguments and our movement to reform these failed policies, but is waiting for the political capital among other elected officials to make a move of any serious consequence.

I really don't know right now if I'd vote him in a 2nd term... I guess I'll have to wait and see what happens here on out.

He may've laughed at us now, but we're the ones that got him elected! If it weren't for 'the online crowd' he wouldn't be in office! I keep hearing he's a one term president...I guess that's going to prove to be true!

(T: There's plenty of reasons to vote for this guy, even if he won't legalise cannabis. Have you seen what he plans to do for science? That's far more important for humanity than getting your own way when it comes to weed.)

It's not just about WEED...it is about HUMANITY. Weed Is about Science. It is about everything. Planet Earth! Humans, That live on it. These are plants that give off oxygen.

If you have had NO EXperience. Then you really dont know what your talking about. WHERE YOU SIT, IS WHERE YOU STAND. Right at this moment...I am standing in a police state. Where is my freedom?

Hey guys. I support ending the prohibition on cannabis. And, I am a conservative. I only recently changed my view on this issue after learning about the Mexican war on our border.

Contrary to what the mainstream media reports, guns are not the issue *at all*. It has everything to do with prohibition. The drug cartels don't try to smuggle alcohol...because prohibition ended.

I don't use any illegal drugs, and am not suggesting any does. The legal consequences are huge.

I realize that most support for ending prohibition comes from the left. Yet, you will need at least some support from those on the right. Now is the best time in our history to make your point to the American people. Momentum is on your/my side, as are the facts.

There are now 2 states with bills to end prohibition. If the bills become law your longtime hope will come true across the country.

Some here have said that they voted for Obama only because of the hope to end prohibition. To me, if he does then it would be the *only* good thing he will do as President.

If I can change my mind then others on the right can. You will get more mileage if you present facts with logic and reason.

I hope the laws change soon.

I am seething and enraged. I did NOT vote for this guy to create a crushing debt to saddle my grandchildren with. I did NOT vote for him to give billions and billions of taxpayer's to greedy, irresponsible corporations and to give millions of dollars in bonuses for their greedy and incompetent executives.

No, I voted his butt into office for one reason, and one reason alone.... to end the War on Drugs and free us from a prison state. And now he laughs and mocks the whole thing. OUTRAGEOUS!!!

And now I hear he has unleashed his DEA goons on another dispensary raid! How rich is that?

That's ok though, no problem. At least we now know who he REALLY is. Anyone who still thinks this guy is about changing the prison state should have just received a wake-up call. If you still believe in this guy, you are a fool. While I readily admit that he is still better than McCain would have been in this area, at least McCain wouldn't have tripled the deficit in his first two months in office!

I am quite simply disguted with Mr. Obama. I will no longer support his hypocritical administration. I pledge that I will fight tooth and nail to oppose ALL of his policies in the future.

Thanks for nothing there Mr. "President".

im a pot smoker and favour legalization but chances are most of those people in the video have tried marijuana. they associate it with something they did when they were young and stupid or they did it when they were depressed and escape reality. thats the thing with marijuana its always associated with something bad or I did it when "times were bad"

I love how the Obama and the audience giggle and smile like school children at the word "Marijuana Legalization" Like it's some joke. It's not.. for people are tired of feeling common crooks and outsiders of society for smoking something that is less harmfull then liqour/beer.. Having to get their medicine from a REAL criminal with more then just marijuana in his pockets, who sells him/her poor quality and rips them off just because they can. Leaving the poor smoker penniless and something that resembles wood mulch.
Doesnt he realize what he would accomplish for ending modern day marijuana prohibition? People would be toking up generations from now regarding him as the greatest president ever despite anything else he does.

PUSH THIS ISSUE EVERYONE!

Let's not freak out people. Although I certainly don't agree with his answer, I don't think people should now suddenly turn against him just because he doesn't want to use hemp to stimulate the economy. Remember, Marijuana legalization isn't the only issue here.

However, I do believe that although it may not be the most pressing issue at hand for Obama's administration, it is an issue that needs to be addressed. To show Obama that this is a serious issue, we need to pressure him into reconsidering his answer. Keep sending him letters, keep pressuring him to change the laws. We can't give up on him just yet, we're still early in his presidential term, so anything could happen.

Barack Obama laughed in the face of an industry, and it's consumers, which is bigger and more profitable than the auto industry.
Now I feel bad for him.
It's up to all of us as concerned humans to force an issue which he disagrees with.
As an inactivist I feel that the time is now for all of us to get off of our collective butts and Force this vital issue.
My own feeling is that we demand a 10 dollar an oz. federal tax in lieu of arrests and then let the states tax it the way they see fit.
I demand the ability to smoke, grow and share!
Love, Dave Green
