The 38th Annual Hash Bash PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 01 April 2009 18:09

The marijuana-rally season kicked off on Apr. 4 in Ann Arbor with the 38th Annual Hash Bash. Orignally started in 1971 to protest the arrest and imprisonment of John Sinclar for two joints, the main event takes place on the University of Michigan campus. More than 1,500 people attended.

Hash Bash t-shirtTwo hundred people met at the Federal Building at 11 am, then marched to the Diag where the rally commenced at High Noon.

The big news this year was Michigan's medical-marijuana law, which went into effect on Apr. 4, making Michigan the 13th state to allow patients to medicate with pot.

There were tributes to Chef RA and Mae Nutt ("Grandma Marijuana"), and numerous references to Derek Copp, the Grand Valley State student who recently was shot by police, during the hour-long speech period.

The festivities continued with bands and vendors at the Monroe Street Fair, from 1 pm on.
