Adventureland (2009) PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 03 April 2009 07:09

Set in a run-down amusement park in Pittsburgh in 1987, Adventureland stars Kristen Stewart, Jesse Eisenberg, Ryan Reynolds, Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader.

James (Eisenberg) is a college grad who's looking forward to a summer traveling in Europe when his parents break the bad news: They can't afford the trip and he needs to get a job. After a friend bestows a bag of weed on James, he applies at Adventureland and is quickly hired by the park's wacky owners, Bobby (Hader) and Paulette (Wiig).

A stuttering, intellectual virgin, James hits it off with Em (Stewart), who's having an affair with the park's resident hunk, Mike (Reynolds). James doesn't know this, setting in motion the movie's crucial conflict.

The bag of pot makes James popular - he's constantly getting hit up for joints and at one point gives Em enough to make chocolate chip cookies with (above). They take a psychedelic bumper car ride, which cements their budding romance.

The music in Adventureland veers wildly between hair-metal (a Foreigner tribute band), prog (one character's into Rush), disco (Lisa P., played by the vivacious Margarita Levieva, loves to dance to it) and alt-rock (the Replacements, Husker Du). There's also a running gag about Lou Reed.

Asked about the role marijuana plays in Adventureland, director Greg Mottola (he also directed Superbad) tells CelebStoner:

"To me, it’s a currency for a very uncool guy to be cool, briefly, at times, because his friend gives him this gift of a baggie of joints and occasionally I’ve had friends like that who’ve said, 'Here, take it, young grasshopper,' and I felt like it was just such a part of life. I grew up in the suburbs. The drinking age was 18 in New York when I grew up. I was an art student who made all the fake IDs. We were just drinking and smoking pot very young.

"I’ve never been a huge stoner because, like Jesse Eisenberg, my brain chemistry is terrible on marijuana. I’m the kind of stoner that needs to get into one of those altered states hydro pods or chambers, I don’t know what they’re called, one of those isolation chambers, and play 'Kind of Blue' over and over again. I can’t be around people when I’m stoned, unlike Seth Rogen, who can write five movies while he’s stoned the entire time."

While this movie had characters smoking weed, I wouldn't really call it a "stoner" movie.
