Despite Suspension, Jeremy Mayfield Says No to Rehab PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 17 May 2009 19:10

NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield claimed he didn't know which drug he tested positive for, leading to his May 9, 2009 suspension.

ESPN reported it was methamphetamine.

Mayfield was hair tested on May 1. NASCAR notified him a week later that he had failed the test. Two other samples came back positive as well.

Jeremy Mayfield"I never got anything saying what it was, no result ever," Mayfield stated. "I've not received any information. They told me I was indefinitely suspended from NASCAR."

NASCAR disputed this. "All NASCAR members who violate the policy, including Jeremy, are notified of the substance that caused the failure," spokesman Ramsey Poston said. "Jeremy was verbally informed of the substance on three occasions last week by NASCAR's medical review officer. NASCAR stands by the reputable physicians and the nationally renowned lab that handles our substance-abuse program."

Mayfield believes the positive test resulted from a combination of Claritin and Adderall XR. He was notified by Dr. David Black of AEGIS, the drug-testing company.

"I take a prescription drug, that's a legal prescription drug is what I take," Mayfield explained. "I had allergies at Richmond that were really, really bad. Thursday I got a call from [his doctor]. He said, 'You tested positive for a certain whatever they call it.' I said, 'OK, no problem. I've got all the paperwork ready.' He said, 'If you fax it to us it'll cancel your [positive test].'"

That didn't happen. "I'm labeled now," he added. "The damage is done. It's huge. My family and friends, everybody that knows me, knows better. It's a huge deal. It's been frustrating."

Mayfield filed suit against NASCAR and AEGIS on May 29, seeking reinstatement. The suit acknowledges methaphetamine was the "unnamed" drug. The request was denied. One June 5, NASCAR countersued.

Mayfield did not comply with NASCAR's compulsory rehab program. "I don't need to go to rehab," he said, "because I don't have a problem."

In 36 NASCAR races, his best finish was fourth in 2003. Mayfield drives a Toyota Camry.
