Veefers vs. Reefers PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 04 June 2009 09:00

Bad blood has spilled over on the media softball diamond. A post at VaniityFair.com about their team's "humiliating 9-0 loss to the High Times Bongringers" on June 1 drew this reply: 'It's easier to call your opponent ringers than to face the fact that you got undressed by stoners."

BonghittersHigh Times' legendary softball team the "Bonghitters," who are part of the NYMSL, and Vanity Fair's "Veefers" have competed since 2002, with High Times leading the series, 8-3. V.F. has lost the last three contests. The latest - a shutout -was a bitter pill to swallow, causing dissension on the club.

The defeat "reminded Matt Pressman, in his sophomore year as coach, that victory shouldn’t be taken for granted - and neither should his job," V.F. posted.

Former coach Michael Hogan pinned the blame on a costly error, not his successor. “It all came down to rhythm after Catfish dropped that fly ball," leading to a seven-run fourth inning by the Bonghitters.

JV Bonghitter commented: "Very thorough and a keen insight into a team bristling with internal combustion. I hope you right your ship and come together as one. Perhaps a few bong hits might calm your team down next time."

In the past, V.F. has complained about the condition of High Times' field at the Heckscher Playground in Central Park ("somewhat inhospitable") and being forced to play with an umpire.

"Try playing all your women next time, and maybe play a little defense," another pro-High Timeser posted about the June 1 drubbing. "That might help better than whining."

On June 14, the Veefers and Reefers met again, this time on V.F.'s home field. "After taking an early 4-1 lead, letting it slip away, and then jumping out front again 9-6, the V.F. squad wound up settling for a 10-10 tie," VanityFair.com posted, calling the game a "moral victory" versus  the "dreaded Bonghitters."

Come on. Everyone knows that HT doesn't have many employees that can play well. I like the quote about teammates being part of the Clinton Administration. Some of them go back Reagan's last term. Ha!

You only held them scoreless for so long cause they were high for the first six innings.

Try playing a little defense? We held you guys scoreless for six out the seven regulation innings. I don't think it's whining to point out that a substantial portion of the High Times team has no current connection to the magazine. Still, it was a fun game. We always have fun playing you guys, except when you get behind and start whining, ha!
