Stricken with breast cancer five years ago, Melissa Etheridge is speaking out about her use and support of medical marijuana. She appeared on AC360 as part of the "America's High" series and is featured in Pot Culture.
Etheridge tells Anderson Cooper that "instantly, within a minute, (marijuana) relieves the nausea, relieves the pain - all of a sudden I was normal."
Asked by Cooper if marijuana is a gateway drug, Etheridge bristles: "No, not at all. It's almost laughable to think you could be addicted to this."
Etheridge says she still smokes to quell acid reflux: "I do use it in a stressful situation. It totally settles all that... If it helps somebody at the end of the day instead of drinking a couple of glasses of wine, to have a few tokes, who are we to say? Why must we in this country be so judgmental? These people are not hurting anyone, they're not hurting themselves."
Etheridge goes into more depth in her Pot Culture interview:
"I'd never been sick before. I'd always been kind of a natural gal. Being in rock & roll, I'd certainly seen my share of drugs, but I was never drawn into heavy usage of anything, ever. But when I was facing chemotherapy, I just heard from many people that marijuana was the way to go.
"When you smoke cannabis, it takes you to a place of 'normal.' You don't get high. When you're healthy and you smoke, you go to other places than your own consciousness, but when you're in physical distress it takes you to a place of peace within your body.
"I discovered the Roor bong, which is absolutely the greatest ever. Then I heard about vaporizers and the genius of the Volcano. When you just inhale the THC from a vaporizer, you get all the effects and get more of a clear high sensation than the foggy high. I also ate it. I would put butter on potatoes or anything. It's not very tasty, but it's medicinal and you get longer relief when you eat it.
"These synthetic things that we keep shoving into our bodies, maybe people will start to reject them and look to herbs like marijuana. We all know the truth about pot but are afraid to speak it."
Etheridge is right.

medical use
Vaporizing is the way to go. I use a the silver surfer vaporizer for my chronic back pain and its helped me so much. Something about lighting up adds to the 'aura' but vaporizing feels so much cleaner and its MUCH more economical
