Bill Maher Needles NORML PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 10 July 2009 06:43

Top CelebStoner Bill Maher is "a little disillusioned" with NORML.

Maher, who is on NORML's Advisory Board, told an interviewer:

"I’ve always said, one of the reasons there’s been so little progress on the marijuana front is that what the movement needs more than anything is some kick-ass, take-no-prisoners, Karl Rove-type lobbyist, you know? And that just never happens, because it’s all a bunch of stoners. You got to get up for that 8 a.m. breakfast meeting with the congressman on Capitol Hill!"

Radical Russ, NORML's outreach coordinator, takes issue with Maher:

"Gee, Bill, thanks for the help. We’ve got NORML Chapter volunteers who drive an hour or two to get to their state capitals by 8 am for those breakfast meetings with representatives, senators, and assemblypersons at the state level. We’ve got Keith Stroup working in close contact with Reps. Barney Franks’ and Ron Paul’s offices at the federal level. We’ve gotten the first marijuana legalization bills introduced in California and Massachusetts and 13 medical marijuana states and 13 decriminalization states all from “kick-ass, take-no-prisoners” lobbying. We’ve got activists who don’t get paid a dime to collect signatures, write letters, and march in protests to show Americans 'there really aren’t any cons' to marijuana legalization. You know, just 'a bunch of stoners.'”

Todd McCormick defended Maher and his assessment of NORML:

"NORML is about to celebrate (really?) their 39th year in business, but I have to ask my fellow activists: do you really think that 40 years of being in business in a mark of success? I see it as failure; I see it as old stale ideas being tried over and over by the same old men holding onto their egos and little positions of power. The reason MPP is hosting parties in the backyard of one of the founders of NORML is because NORML has not got the organizational capabilities of doing it themselves. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Well, my friends, I think it’s time we demand term limits on the directors and get some fresh ideas and direction in this organization or do we really want to be here in another 38 years wishing NORML was not so normal?"

The audio stash is a great example of NORML's ability to adapt to the times and innovate. Listening to the stash on a daily basis has effectively transformed me from a person completely ignorant of the issue into a passionate activist. For this life-altering transformation, I can only thank NORML. Thanks, NORML!

The history of NORML, MPP, and billionaires is a long and sordid one that I won't retell here, suffice to say that outside observation will never reveal the true story.

I'm about moving forward, mending fences, overcoming grudges, and working with all groups and all stakeholders to advance our common goal of ending marijuana prohibition. I feel big money donors and celebrity endorsements are important, but not the prime engine in affecting change. The people, the average toker who doesn't live in California, isn't sick and disabled, and can't call on his celebrity friends to bail him out of jail or bank on sympathy for disability, those are the people I strive to represent.

I never intended anything I wrote to become a treatise on any one or two people or a forum to review perceived failures or successes in the movement. I was simply trying to say that having a celebrity publicly diss an org he's on the advisory board for doesn't make recruiting those average people to stand up for their rights any easier. Whether the diss was accurate or not is irrelevant to my point, which is "praise publicly, critique privately".

I swear sometimes if reform orgs fought "the man" as much as we fight each other, prohibition would be over by now. Yes, it does take two (or three or four) to tango, but the tango wouldn't start if some people would stop cuing up the salsa band.

I completely agree with Todd McCormick's suggestion that NORML put term limits on their directors in order to make it a more effective organization.

The reason NORML doesn't appear to have any financial backing from any millionaires/billionaires is because they have not yet proven that they can utilize their already existing financial resources in an effective manner.

It should be noted that NORML kept the flame burning during the Great Darkness ( Reagan/Bush ) that befell the land.

If NORML , like MPP, had a billionaire flipping them a few million per year they would probably be able to increase their effectiveness.

Given the number of cannabis friendly billionaires, it is surprising that NORML does not have such a benefactor.

As it is, the combined effect of all the groups is clearly moving the ball forward.

Perhaps we can dispense with such negativity?

Just once I would like to see a case study where they had a room full of people drinking and a room full of people smoking and just watch how things play out after a few hours. The legal debate would be over. Every single person reading this knows exactly what I mean. Why would something be legal that stops your ability to walk, talk, think, take care of your children or 'hold your bodily functions'? I've NEVER been so high that I pissed my pants, woke up not remembering the night before or otherwise humiliated myself. I agree that some people cant smoke weed and function. They turn into lazy slobs. However, it is not like that for all. My job is stressful & my PMS symptoms are tough. I get hateful, bi-polar emotional & just overwhelmed. Women that smoke will agree that THC makes those symptoms much easier to cope with. I honestly feel that a THC based product, cream or pill, would be ideal for women who suffer from chronic PMS symptoms and depression but don't want to smoke or cant. Maybe if the pharmaceutical companies could get their greedy f'ing fingers in there it will magically become legal very quickly. We all know they hold a lot of power with the government. The only thing legalizing weed will do is change WHO GETS THE MONEY!! No one who doesn't already smoke is going to change their lifestyle to start smoking all the sudden just because its legal and no one that already smokes cares one little bit that its illegal. How about that?!

The single biggest thing that could be done to save money in every state is change pot from a schedual 1 drug to a schedual 2 or 3 that whould be the best way to handel this we know pot has medical value
and that whould lower penelties
There is a lot of work to be done out there but the ball is rolling just need to keep the momentum going there are a lot of drug war POWS out there that need our help let's not drop the ball

Thanks to you both, Russ and Todd! Now lets move on and go kick some prohibition butts!!!!

I've volunteered for LA and CaNORML for 17 years (has anyone else here done anything for NORML?). Mostly it's been answering questions from people in trouble, as the org. remains the place people know to call when they are up against bad laws. CaNORML is responsible for the introduction of AB390, the first ever state legalization bill. We provided the language and the economic analysis behind it.

I get calls all day long from folks telling NORML what it ought to do, but when I ask for support to do that, it doesn't happen. People tell me they can't join NORML while they're making money off pot, and don't call until they're in trouble and all their money's gone. McCormick just spent $100 grand to advertise his Expo, will any of the money made there go into reform?

As Maher knows, MPP began as a lobbying org, and with a major funder's support hired bulldog Bob Barr -- what happened to that?

Rather than make us the easy butt of jokes, or partying at the Playboy Mansion, all the orgs need to get together for a great Coming Out Day next April 20 with lobbying included. Maher could help by calling his famous friends to get on board. We've had more movement this year since Michael Phelps admitted he hit a bong than we have in 20 years. Perceptions are changing, and it's time for everyone to put down their pipes and pick up their pens.

I think MPP has a bigger War Chest than NORML.

Kick ass lobbyists are fine but what we REALLY need is for everyone who smokes marijuana to stop hiding it. If every one of us who tokes up were to "come out of the closet" and all those who don't smoke mj but support legalization were to speak up then real progress could be made. Strength comes from numbers, but only if those numbers stand up to be counted.

I can tell you right now that Norml is NOT about old stale ideas being tried over and over. Norml is totally accepting of new ideas, new ways of looking at issues and new ways to approach the public and legislators. Get on the audio stash and talk about something new and the first thing you'll find is that it gets published and not simply deleted into cybertrash. The second thing you'll find is that it's openly discussed on its merits, the thing you'll NOT find is that it's rejected simply because it doesn't quite fit in with some narrow, unalterable ideology. I think, Todd, you've got Norml confused with the DEA.
