Death at the Vibes PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 27 July 2009 03:40

A concertgoer was found dead on July 26 at the Gathering of the Vibes festival in Bridgeport, Connecticut. "We've never had a fatality on site," says GOTV founder Ken Hays. "For 14 years it's been my greatest fear. I'm saddened."

GOTV'09TheĀ body of 29-year-old Jay Caliro of East Meadow, New York was dumped near the baseball fields at Seaside Park, said a a camper who saw a green Saturn with Pennsylvania plates drive off at 5:30 am. Police confirmed the death at 7 am.

Nearby campers said the body was purple and bruised.

In addition, police are investigating the sexual assault of a woman who attended the Vibes.

The 14th Annual GOTV featured Crosby, Still & Nash, Bob Weir & Ratdog, George Clinton, Buddy Guy, Keller Williams, moe. and more.

Hays says GOTV may not return to Bridgeport. "We didn't sell out," he notes. "We did in 2007 and didn't in 2008. This year was worse. I think it's a combination of the economy and the unemployment rate. It's an exceptionally expensive venue and that's the reason most festivals don't happen in cities, but in rural areas."

GOTV has already left Bridgeport once before. Most likely, the festival will not return there in 2010.

Vibes returned to Bridgeport for 2010 only to have another human being die. Drug overdose this time - Saturday night during the Primus show... shit was weird, so many confused hippies during that set, amazing. but apparently the new youth don't know how to handle their drugs.
it's a shame and i hope that the organizer is able to continue offering this spectacular festival in Bridgeport after this... 2 deaths in as many years.

I wasn't even aware the nitrous tanks going around were run by a "mafia." But I'm happy Vibes is gonna be in Bridgeport this year.

It's funny all the people in here who are saying nitrus is good, must be some dirty hippy whos out of work who has nothing better to do but completly fry his brain....Why go to concerts and not remember any of it?

Nitrus should be banned and should be treated in the same class as LSD

First of all the nitrous mafia have free range at these shows, they pay off SOC, Bridgeport Cops and they know they can get away with anything. I went to the show with some friends they brought some gas. So the first day this chick comes up to my buddy asks him for some rubbers, he obliges, because she's with the mafia and he thinks if he's cool they want steal his shit or kick his ass. So he asks "permisssion" to rage a few tanks. They say no problem just don't setup right next to us. The next day middle of the afternoon our campsite gets raided by SOC and we get kicked out of the show. Their were tanks everywhere at that show. They knew where we were, they were watching us, who do you think tipped them off? The Mafia will fuck with anyone who gets in their way, but someday they'll be the ones that are screwed. Im saddened by this death and I hope justice will emerge.

Jay spent a week up here with me in NH last Aug. HE BOUGHT A GREEN SATURN!!!!! Does anyone happen to know if that was the same car that dumped him and fled? Jay had been on the scene a long time, I firmly believe that he woul not have done anything to put his life in danger on purpose. I am devastated over this loss, I am in close contact with his family, if anyone has any type of info that may help please contact me eaw25@gmail title it JAY Remain annonymous, I don't care, I just want justice.

Jay was my boyfriend for a long time. I refret the last time I spoke to him. He wasd one of the most gernerous people I have, and probably ever will come across. I'm not sure what exactly happend but I know my heart is broken that such a person could just be left there, in the open and the the way people are talking about him, like he wasn't a human. He had a lot of hard times and was just trying to make the best of his life. FOREVER LOVED AND MISSED
I will see you soon enough Jay, just trying to keep my head up

I woke up to find the body half under our jeep. I was taking a piss at 5:45 in the morning and know for a fact that there was no body there at that time. By 6:45 we were woken by a man yelling medic and we opened our tent to see the man lying on his stomach and a big wound on his side either from decay or trauma. My friends and I were detained for six hour because the body was pretty much touching our jeep. The body was most definately dumped there between that hour while I was sleeping. And as for the N20 mafia. I hope they all go to hell. They ruin every concert. They aren't there for the music and they are all a bunch of dirtbags.

Either you or one of your family members must know someone who owns or works at a catering business. Catering Companies use NO2 in order to keep things cold. If they like you enough they may consider filling your tank for as cheap as $5/lbs. If you supplied enough of your friends with this gas, soon enough your might be able to wipe out the Phili Nitrous Mafia and create a new, and more generous way to supply festies with gas. This does not mean charging people $5 for a baloon that only cost you 33 cents fill.

I want to give the frienbs and family of this poor kid my condolances. I never realized there was such an issue with nitrous. Reading all these quotes makes me realize it is a huge problem. Before i had my daughter I enjoyed going to the fest more for the drugs. I went with my daughter to strange creek in May and she loved it. I enjoyed it more than i ever did before. It saddens me to think that such horrible things happen to people out of greed. Like many people said, It's not solely about the drugs. It's about having a good time with nice people and awesome music.

for the record, i could of easily snuck in a few tanks..i witnessed security get paid what seemed alot of cash and then got escourted to pick up their tanks..overall, vibes was amazing..almost 98% of the ppl i came in contact w/ treated me like family..the music was amazing, and despite the stormy weather, noone complained..i honestly think that someone heard about the festival and dropped the body off as an attempt to not get caught..i feel this to be true..be safe and don't travel[high or not] alone..buddy system will save alot of possible prollems..see you at wormtown, mowdown and next yearat vibes..thank you to everyone who made it full of love and respect.."be good family"

A couple of times I found broken glass on the field and called the "Hotline number for security concerns" listed in the program we were all given, and people showed up and took care of it. Did anyone call security about the nitrous problem?

Anyone who has been to Bisco or any huge festie has seen people OD. I personally have found 2 dead bodies that I reported.. Were the bodies blue? Yes! All sorts of strange marks and burns? No!

I have been reading these posts for days..

All the people who say they saw the body said it was abused. If the people who saw the body said the body looked strange and beaten then I believe it. The NO2 dudes were out of control this year and some of security is definitely in on it.. its a no brainer if you have ever watched the scene for any amount of time.

Hopefully his parents or family will push this issue further..

no2 drugs
Unfortunately, I don't see this problem going away any time soon. We may not have created it, but we sure do feed it.

The solution is simple. Stop buying it! However, it's not easy to get the masses to go along with it.

Maybe people should start making flyers to pass out in the lots. Not flyers about the dangers of nitrous (the people you're trying to reach aren't gonna buy that kind of preaching anyways). I'm talking about flyers that tell the dangers of the nitrous mafia. Maybe if someone got a flyer about this news story while parking in the lot they would be less likely to support them. I know I wouldn't give them 5 bucks for their hetty balloon after hearing about this.

sad little hippie
This is not directly about nitris but it relates to the whole "bad drug" trend going on at festivals.
Last year I attended a festival and I have not been to another since. It was terrible seeing all the people walking around Sunday morning like cracked out zombies and shivering pale and gray underneath blankets in the sun. It truly is sad to see people taking advantage of something good for the sake of drug binges. The festival scene first drew me in for the music and good vibes and a little hallucinations on the side. However, unfortunately it appears to be more about 4 day drug binges with some music in the background. sad sad sad.

i would just like to say that i was there...My first experience ever at a festival, I sold balloons...that doesnt make me a evil scumbag...the four days that i spent were a life changing experience for me, with my connectivity towards people... i also was was one of the first on the scene to the dude that was dead.....i cant comment on the reality of what was there, but you can gather your own conclucions if you saw the body...i saw it before it was covered, and i have pictures of it...i really had a good time, i love all you guys, and yes, i will be seeing you again...dont let shit happing ruin what its really about. poeple like me, for their first time

To the festival organizers: We spend our money at your shows - to enter, camp out, buy from vendors, listen to awesome music and feel that sense of community and family! We hippies brought the message of love and harmony to all. We supported you during those early years - nitrous tanks were confiscated at the gate, the love, peace and happiness were all around us, the music thrived and we were a community. As these festivals became larger - a dark element entered into the scene. The internet changed everything and brought the dark element to these shows. So many people atend these festivals - not in the hopes of sharing the hippie community, but to make a dollar or do drugs or harm others. I was at the All Good last year and really felt the bad vibe. I will not be returning there again (Sorry, Tim). Being a hippie is NOT about the drugs and party - it is about love, sharing, caring and community. We love festivals as it brings the family together and we get to share in beautiful music. We have lost an innocence in our festivals and it will be up to us, as a community to bring that back. As an organizer - please take the necessary steps within your organization to have a zero tolerence policy on NO2 tanks.
To the Festival Go-ers: This is up to you as well. You can make a difference! Stop buying the balloons. Do NOT support the dark side!

this was my first vibes experience, and after being at over 10 other fests and grimy Bisco the weekend before, i thought this would feel like the best one yet... and then around 630am sunday morning in the middle of coming down and laughing hysterically with friends, we hear desperate calls for the medic and find out that 3 campsites over there is a dead body. it doesn't matter what the papers are saying, obviously the papers are trying to keep things as hush hush as possible. the body was purple and blue with bruises and burns all over his back and face. the people (like myself) that were camped this close by are completely aware that this was the NO2 mafia acting like their fucked up selves and ruining what is supposed to be a music and people loving event. our campgrounds were completely solemn for the entire rest of the day on sunday and people couldn't even stick around for the music because of how awful the situation and investigations were going. even later that day my friends witnessed about 60 members of the mafia beat the shit out of somebody's truck and even threaten to beat up my friends that were just chillin in their car close by. the mafia is fucked up, and even though balloons can be fun, murder is fucking whack, and i'm sincerely sorry for those who have been affected by this most tragic and unfortunate event. although seaside park is a lovely venue, it almost felt like a sick joke sticking thousands of hippies in the middle of the ghetto and then seeing what might happen. peace and love to all of those who choose to enjoy festivals in a loving manner.

concerned
People going to festivals need to be aware of the nitrous dealers and their negativity. They are getting so out of control and are going to ruin these experiences for those who come with the right intentions. While it may be a fun buzz for a very short period of time it is not worth it. If you are really looking to get high then buy some acid and have an 8 hour Journey for the price of 1 or 2 balloons. Or buy a bag of weed and smoke it with your friends. Or just dont do any of it. My point is nitrous just isnt worth it. It angers me that this issue has been ignored and allowed to escalate to the point where someone may of lost their life because of the nitrous mafias greed. Everyone needs to understand that these scumbags are not welcome. Drugs should be such a secondary thing to the music. Chemicals certainly enhance the experience and are very much a part of the scene but when it becomes about money and power the atmosphere we all love is diminished.

ive been going to shows and festivals for close to 20 years now. there is always a "bad part of town" at festivals. usually the ghetto is more under the radar than it was at the vibes. i witnessed police and "SOC" drive right past where the "ghetto was and did nothing but slow down. if there are some of you out there that think that secuirity was not paid off, than you are just as ignorant as the people selling balloons!!!! i was given a hard time by security for trying to sell my hand made art without having a legitiment booth. i was totaly shoked by this and argued with the guy..... letting the balloons be sold is ok, but someone like myself trying to sell some art is not allowed. maybe im just getting old, but it seems like the party is more important than the music. if u go to a festival and do nothing but get fucked up the whole time and dont even see any music....do us all a favor and stay at home!!!!! that kid was definitly murdered....i dont care what the police said or what the paper says.....MURDER!!!!! unbelievable.
i read a sign at the solar cafe (which is filled with great hard working people!!!) the sign read "quit your bitchin, start a revolution"

FUCK YOU NITROUS MAFIA....quit breathing our air and go kill yourselves with your own nitrous!!!!!

The body was found next to my friend's car. They were detained by the police for over 4 hours for questioning. This was not an overdose, I saw the body with my own two eyes in the morning. This was a MURDER. Nitrous tanks were everywhere and those kids are fuckin scumbags. The last thing i wanted to see after being dosed late friday nite is a dead body. The NO2 Mafia killed this kid because he was trying to run his own tank for some people and was giving out good deals. His head was clearly crushed(probably by a tank), his face was clearly messed up(from being frozen by nitrous from the tank), and there were sever burns all over his stomach and chest. When i saw the body in the early am hours just before the police were called he had already been dead for at least 24 hours. It stunk! This experience made me not want to continnue to go to festivals. Hopefully i will not see the NM at MOEDOWN.

Too much talk about gas on here. For all we know this kid OD d on his own, hell he could have died from anything including a pre existing medical condition. I feel for this kid and his family but 20000 people get together there is bound to be a few issues. GOTV staff didnt murder this kid. As a matter of fact I thought the grounds were laid out better than they had been in the past. Theres was always a securirity guy close enough if you needed him but far enough away that you could enjoy yourself without feeling like the fences were a prison. I walked around the grounds by myself all weekend and didnt have any trouble at all. I hope to see the Vibes back in Bridgeport next year too.

I think the people in charge should hire 2 nitrous vendors and legally dispense balloons with a wristband to over 18 or 21 year olds. Therefore eliminating the illegal raquet, and providing medical grade, monitered, and restricted. ten to 20 balloons per person the entire venue with a check mark system on the bracelet. Charge 1 to 2$ and destroy the market. Its the only way to stop it. Lets face it a huge whack of N20 rocks! Lets leave it to the pros, and not thugs. Its hippie crack, not CRACK. Have the thugs bring their crack and heroin and kill eachother with it. Peace!

i thouroughly enjoyed the vibes this year, it being my first vibes experience. the only other festival i have been to, was Smile Fest in NC, which was truely filled with peace, love and music. I live around the corner from Seaside Park and as i walked through "shakedown street" and was totally disgusted...there were empty balloons covering the ground, so many that it was almost hard to see the grass...for people who claim to respect themselves and the earth, they really have a hard time understanding what it means to throw their shit away...i am very disappointed that someone died and i am even more suprised that people are saying it is because of nitrous...i mean come on people, i know, i have definately sucked down a few balloons in my day, but really, nitrous, i think everyone needs to get a fucking reality check!
36 Tuesday, 28 July 2009 11:22
FAMILY ENOUGH - mama no deals
i've been at every vibes at seaside. when i heard this news, i had to hold back from crying from sheer dissapointment. i can't stress how glad i was to be camped in east camp this year with real family, not west camp, where the majority of the kids don't seem to know what a trash can is, or the meaning of the words "considerate" or "respect", and were there for all the wrong reasons. vibes is a sacred place for the family. not a place to go to only for drugs. yes, drugs are a part of the culture, and i enjoy them - but it's not the reason to go. and they need to be used properly and responsibly - for the expansion of your mind and heart, not to escape reality. the N2O mafia needs to kick rocks. these kids are NOT family. they come for the sole purpose of making money. roll in with 30+ tanks, $5 a balloon, no deals, no quality, and no kindness. they take business away from family vendors. they're ruining our scene. in my opinion, this fest got too big. back in '99, it was less than half this size. ken hays should do what he did back in '02 - sell ONLY 3 day camping passes. fuck day passes, no passes at the gate. if he's worried about losing money, he should scale back on everything, and not book acts like crosby, stills, and nash. FAMILY ONLY. NO DEALS.
keep your heads up, kids. if you see someone throw trash on the ground, pick it up and tell your brother how it is. smile and hug each other. remind each other why we're there - 'cause unfortunately, some of us gotta be reminded. DON'T LET THE CUSTIES GET YOU DOWN! STAY STRONG FAMILY!
much love
mama no deals

family = genuine, kind, generous, honest

i had a blast at this event. and yes i sold some gas. there are some of us not involved with the N mafia that make a little scrill and hook up people while charging others. just remember there are good positive people giving and selling balloons with joy in their hearts. so if your going to f up the N mafia make sure they are the ones you are actually targetting. peace and love

I was camped pretty close to the scene and it was really surrounded for a bit. I hate no2 mafia but at one point a mob of hippies basically punched out these kids and wrecked their car because they had a few tanks. I rarely do nitrous but i do see the differene between no2 mafia and kids who have some cans and are selling them cheaper than the no2 maf, i was really disappointed when i saw people who preach peace and love just act so violently, a few people got hurt and some kid's parent's car is beat to shit and of course, some one lost their life. Fuck security for never being anywhere, and equally the cops, if they're gonna hang around they might as well do something worthwhile.

I had the time of my life at vibes on saturday, it was fantastic... i didnt touch any shit, cuz that shit shouldnt be there. Its fucked up, come enjoy the music, thats what festivals are for. I understand drugs are big at festivals, but shit, if someone ends up dead cuz of some fucking drug dealers, thats fucked up and i dont that shit at my show. Come enjoy the music, drink some beer, smoke a bowl, whatever, but come on guys things have gone to far.

true the nitrous causes problems but it's not the only problem...people cannot handle their acid etc and freak out. Nitrous (crack) Ally was super shady in the day light i can't even imagine what it looked like in the dark, however, I was camped up by the beach and it was not anything like that! I am saddened that events like this can occur at a truly beautiful venue!

It was definitely murder.... they were and are trying to cover that up. I say everyone should stop buying balloons. This was my 11th vibes in the past 14 years that I have been going. The crowd is different.. I dont like this new crowd...

For years it's been fuck the people with the gas, fuck gas, we hate gas, but then I see you stand in line and crack out all night long!!!!! Violence is not right, don't kill people, but no one is really saying what happened? Gas is always the scapegoat for every festivals problems...but again the lines are crazy and PEOPLE beg for the gas!! You wonder why the gas crew is angry and dangerous...because they're fuking hunted, hated, and need to be defensive cause they usually have all your money!!

the problem is not the nitrios mafia the problem is the people that are on drugs and cant handle the LSD, Mushrooms, and are always hallusinating and always thinking that the nitrous mafia is always hurting someone, and indeed, they are always making the festival better by bringing in the nitrous so everyone can enjoyable time.

That man got involved with the wrong people. Not enough of us promoting love and good vibes we need to talk about good vibes set a good exsample for one another.there should be people making statements on stage talking about whats rite an setting forth the rite way to be.People do much better with a little direction. The staff could have done more about the scene and the bath rooms but it seemed the concerns were inside and watching over the trash not any staff were out side or at the camp rest rooms or even regulating much at all.Its more than just the nitrous its the gangster mantallity that seems to rule now no more hippies just people strugling to make money. We all need to do ower part and spread the good vibes and set the right exsamples for the others to follow suit much love to all

the reason security didn't do shit about the nitrous was because those scumbags pay security off so that they can make their money all night without interruptions. i watched security ride past nitrous alley all night and all morning, they didn't even turn their heads. hmmm maybe someone should be doing something about that as well? i hope the nitrous mob get's assassinated for this, honestly, they need to be taken the fuck out. they are ruining a festival for music lovers by being money hungry thieves and i truly hope they get what they deserve...whatever that may be.

Been going for 7 years now always had a good time. This year was the worst. I saw people crawling under the fences and many people without bracelets. Security did a terrible job. bracelets were not closely watched.I had friends on shakedown st right near "nitrous ally" They said the didn't get any sleep because of these people. There was no attempts to stop the nitrous mob until the festival was mainly over. It is so sad that someone lost their like over nitrous.

I had heard of 2 buddies being found the one I got a description of sounds like the above story. I heard that he was also burnt. There was a staff member that over heard some nitrous guys saying they were going to find a guy and kill him for stealing money. I hope this was not the same guy.

I miss ILCC there are no sketchy people coming in of the street peedeling there crap. These people ruin the vibes for the rest of us. I am sorry to bridgport, the Vibes organizers and anyone who was affected by this.

I know we picked up two trash bags of stuff that wasn't ares and it didn't even make a dent.

Truly disgusted with the camping atmosphere this year.

I was about 4 cars down from the body. The first thing i guessed was that the nitrous crew was involved.

the night before I heard no2 people screaming at eachother and threatening eachother. At the festival feel goog in west virginia, itrous crews were throwing bricks at eachother!

I highly doubt this man's death was medical related/accidental. His body was dumped by someone and he had wounds.

I was there
I woke up at my campsite around 9:30am and as I walked out of my tent I saw crime-scene tape encircling the camp area next to me. I walked 50 feet down the site and saw others looking at the body on the ground covered with a white sheet.
I'm still waiting for the facts, but this was no medical accident.
I know.
I was there.
If the nitrous mob was involved, though.....
Then damn them to hell and it's time for new ideas and plans to put an end to this crap.
That's not what I go to the Vibes for.

power to peace
It was disgusting how many balloons were scattered on the ground as we were getting ready to leave. We must have picked up hundreds ourselves. We have been going to the vibes for the past couple years and this year the amount of no2 was outrageous. I thought security was supposed to be cracking down on this... if they just did their jobs, everyone would benefit. My husband and I brought our 1 year old daughter this year and while we were fortunate enough to make it through the weekend unharmed, it's sad to think that something like that happened close to where we camped. Why can't people join together and enjoy the music, smoke a little weed and have a good time. Where's the love??????

Hmmm...witness saw a body dumped from the trunk of a car with PA plates...Nitrous is easily obtained in PA without many restrictions...Many Many nitrous dealers in the vicinity of where body was dumped...witness saw bruised body and burned face....ummmmm unless there is some new awful disease which pumbles you bruised and battered and unless we have some really bad doctors from PA who drive green saturns...Im no sherlock holmes but something tells me this was NOT medically related but in fact a murder and obviously commited by these N20 cats.....

After hearing about this I was quite saddened. I have attended quite a few festivals and there are some areas that are just shady. I dont know where they are describing a western baseball field because there are a few that line the beach. But i have a good idea. Im going to say it was the field right across from nitrous alley. shady ass spot. especially at night. maybe they dumped it elsewhere. There was also a LOT of rumors going aroudn about a second body found in the water. I do not know many details about this. And I heard that one of the bodies' face was all messed up from taking direct nitrous from the tank and freezing. its so sad this happens. At all good in the concert area I was confronted for smoking a bowl of marijuana by a security person. He asked us to put it away and it was not allwed in the concert area. But they couldnt do anything about the NOS on shakedown either. does anyone else find something wrong with that?

let's be realistic people; there's always gonna be some nitrous and if you don't do it they can't sell it. i've done it a bunch of times but it is one of the stupiest drugs to over-do that exists, unless you wann be really dumb then you should do a lot. and these fucking 'mob' or whatever, I hate even looking at them so grimey always eyes bulging staring at you, do they even like the music?! ask them next time you see them, they are not hippies by the way, they are just crackheads.

This was my first Vibes. My girlfriend and I were camped in a field just west of the baseball fields and in from the beach at the supply stand next to the little donut stand. On Sun as we were packing there was a TON of activity near us! First it was cops on ATVs going around, and then what seemed to be undercover cops hiding IN people's camp sites & calling each other on Nextel-style ph1ones. Later that became a mob of festival goers going around, followed by 3-4 ATVs and one police K-9 unit. Then around 5 there was a gang of guys hiding behind some cars near a big tree in the middle of the field (def not their camp site, either), and they were there chillin for at least 2 hours... It was so shady my GF was scared and was asking me to get her out of there ASAP.

I hope that the Vibes staff in the future will take a more serious stand to Nitrous, and make a strong effort to keep the 'mob' off of the property.

Nitrous suppliers are grimy, angry, and do not know how to enjoy themselves. The thousands of empty balloons scattered all over the place pollute Seaside Park and give it a trashy feel. Overall these people make me feel unsafe and bring a negative atmosphere to an extremely positive event. This action I'm sure would make thousands feel more comfortable, and make the atmosphere a lot less sketchy.

That body was right around where i was camping, pretty crazy. But this shouldnt affect the festival or give it a negative "vibe" its a fun festival with great people. And muoyfrio your an idiot, this festival had no violence involved, if anything it made bridgeport a better place to be, plus alot of news reports are saying no fowl play was involved, the kid obv. overdosed. Also if u think vibes is a bad place try going to camp bisco, much much much worst.

ruining every scene
event staff and security throughout the country are the ones that allow the Nitrous Mafia to operate at festivals. At All Good this year, the Nitrous Mafia was given free reighn Friday night, and no tanks were busted until Saturday.
