'Mad Men' About Marijuana PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 31 August 2009 05:33

It took three seasons and the clock to tick to 1963 for marijuana to make its first appearance on Mad Men, TV's top show.

Elisabeth MossThe episode, "My Old Kentucky Home" (the third of this third season), doesn't really go anywhere. There's no particular office intrigue and the bulk of the action takes place at a country club party. The meandering pot-smoking scenes fit right in.

It starts when Paul Kinsey (Michael Gladis) and Smitty buy pot from Paul's dealer friend, Jeff. "I got Dexies, Benzedrine strips, boo - probably get you junk if you really wanted it," says Jeff.

"Can we buy some dope?" Smitty asks.

"I'll give you all four for $10," Jeff says, referring to joints.

Their boss at Sterling Cooper ad agency, Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss, above), sniffs a strange odor and knocks on the door. "I know what you're doing," she says.

"I need it for inspiration," Paul explains. "It's Saturday for God's sake."

"You're going to have to tell me your name, sweetheart," Jeff flirts with Peggy.

"I'm Peggy Olson and I want to smoke some marijuana," Peggy shockingly declares.

Smitty lights a joint. Peggy takes several long hits. Paul and Jeff taunt each other about their singing abilities and then break into "Hello My Baby."

"I am so high," Peggy exclaims. "I'm in a very good place now."

Moss married Saturday Night Live's Fred Armisen on Oct. 24.

Actually, Don smoked marijuana with his mistress, Midge, and her beatnik friends first season. I think it was episode 8.
