2009 Champions: Wall Street Journal PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 14 September 2009 05:33

The third time was the charm for Wall St. Journal, whose media softball team knocked off defending champs BusinessWeek and DC Comics in impressive fashion to become the NYMSL's third different title holder since the league's inception in 2007.

After an 8-2 regular season that earned them first-seed in the playoffs, WSJ overwhelmed DC 17-7 in their semifinal match, while BW held off High Times - the league's first champion - 8-3.

The final game of the 2009 season - WSJ vs. BW - was a pitcher's duel until the top of the 6th inning when WSJ loaded the bases and SS Eddie Freel cleared them with a 3-run triple. That was all the offense starter Russ Adams, who allowed just 5 hits, would need.

Solid from top to bottom and led by their unflappable coach and CF Aaron Lucchetti, WSJ got off to a 5-0 regular-season start. Then HT reeled of 8 straight victories and took over 1st place. But WSJ defeated HT 6-4  on Sept. 2 and closed the season with a victory over WNYC, taking the top spot.

Holy cow! High Times hype goes up in smoke! All the HT hype that is fit to print. I guess for all their braggadicio HT fails to win it again. Looks like they will need to replinish their squad with old stoners from the unemployment line.
