Marijuana arrests are down by nearly 25,000, according to new FBI statistics. Still, 847,863 people were nabbed for pot in 2008. The last time arrests declined was seven years ago.

"This slight dip in the number of marijuana arrests provides a small amount of relief to the tens of millions of American marijuana consumers who have been under attack by their own government for decades," says MPP executive director Rob Kampia.

In 2007, 872,721 people were arrested for marijuana, as compared to 697,082 in 2002.

Drug busts overall continued to climb to 1.7 million, 12% more than in 2007. Drug violations are the most frequent reasons for arrests (12.2%) out of the 14 million made annually in the U.S.
