Dana Beal Busted in Nebraska PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 02 October 2009 11:59

New York marijuana activist Dana Beal was arrested with 150 pounds of pot on Sept. 23. Nebraska police apprehended Beal and two other men in a van in Ashland near Interstate 80 (just West of Omaha) after the Ford Econoline was stopped for an obstucted license plate. Beal was released on $500,000 bail on Oct. 23.

Dana BealThe Cures Not Wars founder has had numerous run-ins with the law, the most recent of which came last June when Illinois authorities confiscated a small amount of marijuana and $150,000 from him. This past May, Beal pled guilty to the pot charge and paid a fine, but the cash was not returned.

Beal organizes the annual Global Marijuana March each May.

Russ you spoke out without really knowing any of the facts about the case of how much time and money Dana has invested on his own for the cause. Have you spoken to Dana since this happened?

Having said that if you use marijuana weather to injest it or to sell it to fund whatever you should support legalization groups. Those that dont piss me off too. Perhaps you should be more focused on changing the laws in order to end prohibition then worrying about the price and who's doing what to raise funds.

We dont need people to flood the market we need to be able to grow our own without going to jail for it.

Dana is a good brother, the cops should be worrying about hard drugs not weed.No one person knows where that weed was going. I know people are going to smoke it medical or personal for sale? For free?Legalize it and we would not be in this mess.. POT HEADS ARE NOT TERRIORIST.Go after heroin and cocaine, real danger to society and to the polce give everybody a break on herb c'mon already.DANA and the rest of the crusaders keep on P.S.pot will not disapear,it grows in the ground.duh........NYC IS KING....

There seems to be some judgmental people here who are deeply offended by the concept of profit.

You can be sure Dana has a good lawyer and hopefully he/she will do a good job.

If I had 150 pounds to transport across the country, I would probably rent a cessna. It is much harder to get pulled over.

to so-called "radical russ" on his blog: High all: new to this “blogging”? and amazed at what I just read here. seems to me that the ol divide & conquer is at work once again. For a rep of the movement, rr sure is divisive. Your bs should be on YOUROWNSITE not here. If this is what norml’s up to, I’m sad. You sound like an agent provocateur. [french] a person who provokes trouble, causes dissension, or the like; agitator.
fyi: sometimes even small profits are put back into the cause. ie. cures-not-wars & worldwide mj march. everyone has an opinion. Some of them r BS.
like yours. I’d apologize for b ing rude, but hey, sometimes the truth hurts.

Russ, does a NORML outreach coordinator get paid? I know for a fact that I sponsored events and such for legalization for years and 13 years later I still get blacklisted by people that are supposed to be my friends when it comes to employment opportunities. Yeah, they are worried about the image of their business. The police like to call up my employers when I do have a job and talk shit about me and try to get me fired. So what if Dana made a buck with what he is expert at . . . I'll bet you get paid Russ.

I am a marijuana activist from New Zealand and had the pleasure of meeting Dana for the first time when he visited New Zealand last month. I think we should stop passing judgment and look at the facts. This may be the most famous cannabis bust in history. Why not use this unfortunate event as the biggest catalyst for discussion ever. Of course there must be cannabis involved when there is cannabis activism.I suggest that it is the currency that funds the movement. And despite over 40 years of continued reasoned debate for cannabis legalization there is no real money to fund cannabis law change.
Finally cannabis is medicine for thousands of people. Can we turn this lemon into lemonade and get perspective on the plant and not the people? Free the weed!

Dana is a political prisoner plain and simple. He is no smuggler. In fact, his work in finding cures for addiction and legalization of pot is aimed at putting all smugglers out of business. Law enforcement needs to understand that busting someone with Dana's long activism for legalizing the very herb for which he was arrested is in fact quieting dissent with police action. Let him go, back to the village.

Friends of the cause- there is a middle ground. I suggest that the man is old school & herb is available at 1970 prices. Small profit may be going back into posters flyers etc too. everyone has an opinion but some are not based on fact/knowledge.

I am highly disappointed in those of you who would divide this community with threats and harsh language towards one of our hardest working Pro-Pot activists. Russ has dedicated himself to this movement and offers a realistic POV and solutions to many of our challenges. I don't know Dana and I'm sure that he is an awesome guy! BUT!!! the decision to drive cross country with 150 Lbs, some of which was in "plain view" was a bad one. After many years involved with the marijuana movement, Dana should have know better... No Jail for pot, for SURE but don't excuse bad planning.

Relax
Everyone needs to relax on this, Russ made good points. Unless we find out that he planned on giving it all away for free, it DOES seem that hes trying to make a quick buck which doesn't help the legalization movement at all. You people are acting as though Russ said Dana should rot in jail, all he said was he SEEMS as though Dana was trying to take advantage of a corrupt system. No one has said anything against Dana's character or that he isn't a nice guy or that this isn't tragic. This isn't a place for people to trash someone for their opinion, and for someone to suggest Russ give up his position is just plain ludicrous.

I feel bad for Dana, it seems like he has some unfortunate luck. I know he has been caring for medical marijuana patients in New York since before anyone knew what medical marijuana was! He has given tons of pot away for FREE to people with AIDS and cancer. He has risked his life to do this, which is more than I can say for people like Russ Bellville.

Russ, I hope no one passes another joint your way. Where do you get your smoke? From a saint or from someone who has calculated risk vs. reward? Whether it's 1.5 grams or 150 lbs., all pot prisoners deserve our support.

Wow! I think I'm in shock. I met him briefly at the NORML conference in San Francisco. I am the last person in the world that would ever judge anyone. I am sending out an email to my friends to see if they can help in any way. I wish nothing but peace and an end to unjust arrests specifically for Medical Marijuana patients.

I love Russ Belville personally. I think he's both intelligent and dynamic and provides a great service to the marijuana community through his podcasts and outreach services for NORML.

NORML is a great organization that I respect enormously :-)I am more of the mind to stay in the positive and try to live in peace.

My, what kind and thoughtful responses! "Smellville", now that's creative. Haven't heard that one since third grade.

I'm always open for constructive dialog. I'm always open to education. But taunts of "asshole" and threats of "pie-ing" don't fit that bill. With p.r. tactics like this, it's no wonder the Yippie generation couldn't get it legalized.

So if someone can explain the altruistic intent that gets one busted for 150lbs driving cross-country, I'm listening. If 150lbs was being donated for free to suffering patients, I'll gladly apologize. If the $450,000 that can be made off 150lbs was going to reform orgs to help make the business legit, I'll change my tune.

But if someone is trafficking 150lbs to sell at grossly inflated prohibitionary prices for personal profit, then a bust and half-million bail is the cost of doing business, no? If you can't do the time...

I'm tired of dealers (and I have no evidence Beal was one, so hold off on your next curse) making bank off of pot consumers then complaining to NORML how unfair ir is when they get caught. I'm tired of trying to tell the public that pot consumers are normal law-abiding citizens, then having to defend someone busted trafficking 150lbs of weed cross country, especially when it is likely it came from California and our opponents will seize on that to say, "See, we told you medical marijuana is being abused by criminals!", thereby endangering the medical marijuana system for everyone.

People selling weed at ridiculous prohibition prices have as much vested interest in keeping weed illegal as the cops and prosecutors who bust them. If every dealer flooded the market with $20/ounce weed, this prohibition would be over in a month.

As for Dana, as I said before, he seems to be a nice man and he has done so much to try and legalize cannabis, so maybe my comments were too personalized. I'm writing in general terms here.

And finally, no matter the circumstance, nobody deserves jail for weed, period. However, I will reserve more sympathy for college kids losing a student loan and retired folks in need of medicine than someone trafficking 150lbs.

If you want to speak to me man to man about it, feel free to call 347-994-1810 next Saturday between 9-11pm ET. You can even call me an asshole; my show has no FCC regs to worry about.

Russ Belville, NORML Outreach Coordinator
Dana Beal was in the front row of my break-out session Saturday at NORML CON. Before we started he asked for a moment to address the attendees regarding the Worldwide Marijuana March.

It was my first opportunity to meet him and thank him personally for the march. It was at the Portland March in 2005 where I first met Madeline Martinez and this whole crazy career of mine started into motion.

One hundred fifty pounds of cannabis, huh? Unless that's personal use for a lifetime, it looks like Dana was trying to make a living off of prohibition. When you're a high-profile activist, a trafficking bust like this doesn't really help the cause much. It kinda erodes the moral high ground to be rallying to end prohibition because it gives young people a criminal record on the one hand, but then profiting from the black market excise tax those young people will pay to buy marijuana on the other hand.

I hope everything goes well for Dana; he is a very nice gentleman and I'd like a chance to see him again someday.
