Kevin Smith to Kids: 'Do Weed!'

Stoner movie director Kevin Smith has never been shy about his fondness for marijuana. He posed with a huge pile of the stuff on the cover of High Times in 2001, has featured himself (Silent Bob) and Jay (Jason Mewes) as pot heads in many of his movies, and now advises the nation's youth to "Do weed! Don't do the other stuff, but weed is good."

Smith credits Seth Rogen with encouraging him to smoke more pot: “Seth is on top of the world. (He) changed my definition of success. (He's) a functioning stoner."

"I know you're supposed to tell kids not to do drugs," Smith says. "What you want to do is what I did - build a movie empire and, at age 38 smoke it all away."

The director's films include Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Clerks and Zack and Miro Make a Porno, starring his BF Rogen.

In the 2001 High Times interview, Smith stated:

"While I'm not as out there for legalization as someone like Woody Harrelson, I'm certainly not one of those people who thinks it belongs on a banned substance list. It should be off and legalized. Weed for most people is experimental. You hit a certain age and you get into it. Some people stay with it. I've never encountered weed smokers who have turned into anything horrible. I don't think it's a stepping stone to crack or heroin or anything like that. I think those who use weed and later wind up on crack or something harder have addictive personalities. It has nothing to do with weed. Some people are born addicts. But there are a lot of people like me who can smoke weed and still get a day's work done.

"When I was 18, right after high school. I got into it," he added. "I enjoyed it as a social lubricant - great for chuckles, for getting into that zone where everything is funny."

Smith's next movie, A Couple of Dicks, with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan, is scheduled for a February release.
