CAMP (Campaign Against Marijuana Planting) reports that 558,000 plants were seized in Shasta County in 2009, compared to 507,000 for Lake County. In 2008, Lake led all of the state's 58 counties.
In 2009, California plant seizures soared to 4.4 million, up from 2.9 million in 2008 and 1.7 million in 2007.
The bulk of the seizures (more than 75%) took place on public lands, such as Shasta-Trinity National Forest.
"Mexican drug trafficking organizations are exploiting our pristine public lands with these massive marijuana gardens," U.S. Attorney Lawrence G. Brown states.
"The fact is this program [CAMP] is and always has been a complete exercise in futility," MPP's Bruce Mirken contends "It's a jobs program for cops and drug war bureaucrats and nothing else."
Shasta County, named for an Indian tribe, saw an increase from 394,000 plants seized in 2008 to 557,000 this year. It's home to Lassen Volcanic National Park, while majestic Mt. Shasta (14,179 feet, at right) is actually located north in Siskiyou County. And just north of Mt. Shasta is CelebStoner's favorite town in California: Weed!
