Cy Young Stoner: Giants' Lincecum Busted for Pot PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 06 November 2009 01:23

All-Star pitcher Tim Lincecum was arrested for marijuana possession during a traffic stop in Southern Washington State on Oct. 30, 2009. When police pulled over his Mercedes for speeding and smelled pot, he surrendered an eighth-ounce of weed and a pipe.

Tim LincecumLincecum, who was driving north on I-5, had just crossed from Oregon into Washington at 8:33 am when a State trooper pulled him over in Hazel Dell for driving 74 mph. Washington Patrol spokesman Steve Schatzel says the officer asked Lincecum to "hand over" the marijuana. He produced a "pouch and pipe."

The 25-year-old hurler was cited for speeding and charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and paraphernalia use.

On Nov. 2, Clark County deputy prosecutor Grant Hansen dropped the marijuana charge. “His attorney came to our office Monday," he says. "We negotiated the case in the manner we do with just about every first-time marijauana/drug paraphernalia case where the individual is cooperative with the officer. We dismissed possession of marijuana and amended the other charge to buying or selling drug paraphernalia, a Class A civil infraction. It could have been the kid next door. The fact it’s a celebrity doesn’t mean he doesn’t get the same deal.”

Lincecum agreed to pay a $250 fine on the paraphernalia charge and another $122 for speeding.

Lincecum grew up in Bellevue, Washington, just east of Seattle. He was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 2006 after starring at the University of Washington. Two years later, Lincecum won the Cy Young Award with an 18-5 record, 2.62 ERA and 265 strikeouts. Lincecum, who wears his hair long for a baseball player, started the 2009 All-Star Game for the National League and complied a 15-7 record, 2.47 ERA and 261 strikeouts in his third professional season.
