Smoke & Mirrors: 'Mad Men' Season 3 Recap PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 09 November 2009 22:33

Don (Jon Hamm) may have lost his wife and job, but Season 3 of AMC's Mad Men will be best remembered by stoners for Elisabeth Moss' daring declaration, "I'm Peggy Olson and I want to smoke some marijuana!"

Episode 3 of Season 3 set in 1963 featured a drug dealer and scenes of staffers at the Sterling Cooper ad agency smoking joints. "I need it for inspiration," Paul (Michael Gladdis) explains as Peggy barges into their Saturday afternoon sesh. Rather than punish them for puffing, she joins the party. "I am so high," Peggy says. "I'm in a very good place now."

The same can't be said for Don and Betty (January Jones), whose marriage has been teetering on the edge of break-up for the last two seasons. Don had several affairs over that time, and had to cut off his latest when Betty found out about his previous marriage and identity theft (his real name is Dick).

Don is a dick, and the Brits who bought Sterling Cooper and then sold it by the end of the season, weren't much better.

When Mad Men returns next summer, Don will have formed a new company with Sterling (John Slattery), Cooper (Robert Morse), Lane (Jared Harris), Pete (Vincent Kartheiser), Harry (Rich Summer), Joan (Christina Hendricks) and pothead Peggy.

Months after the JFK assassination, the country will be heading full bore into Vietnam, thanks to LBJ, and the student uprising and counterculture will begin taking shape. It should be an interesting Season 4. Can't wait!
