Top CelebStoner Woody Harrelson appears to be suffering from short-term memory loss. In a recent interview, the actor who's currently starring in The Messenger, Zombieland and 2012 said: "I’ve been the poster boy for the marijuana legalization movement and it’s not fair to those people that actually do it. I’ve never been involved in that struggle." Well, not quite.

Woody HarrelsonHarrelson is correct to say that when he was arrested for planting four hemp seeds in Kentucky in 1996 (he won the case in 2000), he did indeed become the marijuana movement's celebrity poster boy. But Harrelson didn't stop there. He accepted NORML's offer to join its Advisory Board (he's still on the board), gave rousing speeches at the NORML Conference in 2003 and at the Seattle Hempfest in 2001, and further cemented his status in the cannabis community by narrating Ron Mann's brilliant pot-doc Grass in 1999.

Harrelson may not have not done much for the cause lately, but for him to say he's "never been involved in the struggle" is disingenuous and also not fair to NORML.

In that same interview, Harrelson went on to say: "Do I think [marijuana] should be legalized? Of course! I think when you live in a free country you have to take a look at what constitutes freedom. In my mind I can do anything I want as long as I don’t hurt you or your property. You might say that I’m more of an advocate of freedom. We live in a country where 75% of the people in prison are there for victimless crimes, meaning no one gets hurt except the person perpetrating the so-called crime."

Thanks in part to Harrelson's willingness to get arrested and raise awareness about the prohibited hemp plant 13 years ago, we're starting to seeing significant changes happen before our eyes. Rather than move away from the struggle when the marijuana issue is so hot, Harrelson should be more involved than ever. We need him and other celebrities to step forward now, not shy away.
