In Abel Ferrara's original Bad Lieutenant (1992), Harvey Keitel plumbed the depths with his portrayal of LT, one of the dirtiest cops ever to appear on screen. While Ferrara skillfully depicted the dark side of police life, Werner Herzog’s post Katrina update Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans paints a a more amusing portrait, with Nicolas Cage replacing Keitel as the drug-addled cop who stops at nothing to acquire drugs and abuses anyone who gets in his way.
Cage typically overacts in contrast to Keitel’s more nuanced performance. And unlike Keitel's LT, Cage’s Terence not only shakes his bookie, but he earns a promotion. Watch the trailer here
