It's M for Marijuana in California PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 12 January 2010 23:18

Today, the Public Safety Committee in California's Assembly voted 4-3 today in favor of Tom Ammiano's bill that would tax and regulate marijuana. "This is a significant vote because it legitimizes the quest for debate," the state rep said. "There was a time when the 'm' word would not be brought up in Sacramento."

Tom AmmianoAB 390's next stop is the Health Committee. Mostly likely the pot bill will not make it out of the committee before Friday's deadline. Ammiano plans to reintroduce the bill on Jan. 23.

Ammiano's goal is to make marijuana available in stores like alcohol. He's proposed a $50 per ounce weed tax. The bill also allows personal cultivation of no more than 10 plants at one time. Commercial cultivators would be required to pay an initial license fee of $5,000 and $2,500 per year to renew.
