Famous for leading the world in opium cultivation, now Afghanistan is the world's leader in cannabis cultivation too. A UN report says the country produced upwards of 3,500 tons last year. All of it was made into hash.
According to the report, "Like opium, cannabis cultivation, production and trafficking are taxed by those who control the territory, providing an additional source of revenue for insurgents."
Basically, money earned from hash production is going to the Taliban (the insurgents), who collect a 10% tax. The UN's Antonia Maria Costa adds: "Part of the revenues goes to insurgent groups to finance their attacks against Coalition forces in southern Afghanistan."
Poppies remain No. 1 in Afghanistan. "You can walk around with opium for 10 to 15 years and, perhaps, like the wine it gets better with the time," advises the UN's Jean-Luc Lemahieu. "For cannabis, you need to process it really immediately,"
