From Aberdeen to Zaragoza, Spain, protests calling for the end of marijuana prohibition took place around the world on May 1. In the U.S., 184 cities hosted rallies and marches.
 In New York, the turnout was surprisingly small. About 200 people marched to Dag Hammarskjold Plaza across from the U.N. Less than 100 hardcore supporters stayed for speeches by 92-year-old comedian Prof. Irwin Corey, Cures Not Wars' Dana Beal, High Times' Rick Cusick, Empire State NORML's Doug Greene, "Ganja Granny" Arlene Williams, CelebStoner's Steve Bloom, and Senatorial candidates Randy Credico and John Clifton, and band sets by Roast Beef Curtains and Ashy L Bowls.
Though New York is the original home for the Global Marijuana March (the first one took place in 1972), the event has deteriorated over the years. After overcrowding Washington Square Park in the '90s, the city relocated it to Battery Park, where mass arrests took place during Guiliani's repressive reign as mayor. Few appear to know about the event these days. Even with 80-degree weather, New York pot smokers were clearly elsewhere.
