After winning the National League's Cy Young Award in his first two seasons, San Francisco Giants' ace Tim Lincecum went 16-10 in 2010. For the second straight year, he was named to to the NL All-Star team.
Overall, Lincecum posted a 3.44 ERA and led the NL with 231 strikeouts in 2010. The Giants (92-70) won the NL West pennant. On Oct. 7, Lincecum struck out 14 batters en route to a stunning two-hit shutout od the Braves in Game 1 of the NLDS. It was his first playoff experience. On Oct. 16, the Giants beat the Phillies 4-3 behind Lincecum in Game 1 of the NLCS. On Oct. 21, Lincecum lost Game 5, 4-2. The Giants won Game 6 and NLCS, sending them to the World Series against Texas. The Giants have never won a WS in San Francisco. The last time the franchise did was in 1954, when they played in New York. This is the Rangers' first visit to the WS. On Oct. 27, the Giants pounded the Rangers, 11-7, in Game 1 of the WS. Lincecum lasted only 5-2/3 innings, but got the win, his third so far this post season. On Nov. 1, Lincecum was at his best, striking out 10 and leading the Giants to a 3-1 that wrapped up the World Series - the Giants first in 56 years! About Lincecum's August slump, San Franciso attorney Tony Serra commented: "His decline occurred after his marijuana conviction. He obviously has not 'medicated' since then. Baseball pitchers, like trial lawyers, have a 'high stress' vocation. Marijuana ably moderates stress. Lincecum suffers from 'cannabis deprivation.' Really!" Lincecum was busted for pot on October 30, 2009 during a traffic stop in Washington State. He paid a fine in January. "Let Tim Smoke" and "Let Timmy Smoke" t-shirts are popular among Bay Area baseball stoners. The 5-11 fireballer is ranked as MLB's seventh most marketable player, behind Derek Jeter, Albert Pujols, Joe Mauer, Stephen Strasberg, Ryan Howard and Evan Longoria and ahead of David Wright and Alex Rodriguez.
