Hey 19! California's Tax Cannabis Proposition PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 29 June 2010 18:56

There is now a number attached to the initiative that would "legalize marijuana and allow it to be taxed and regulated" in California in November: Prop 19. And CelebStoner has designated the ballot's theme song: Steely Dan's "Hey Nineteen." LISTEN TO THE SONG BELOW

The official Prop 19 summary reads as follows:

Yes on Prop 19Allows people 21 years old or older to possess, cultivate, or transport marijuana for personal use. Permits local governments to regulate and tax commercial production and sale of marijuana to people 21 years old or older. Prohibits people from possessing marijuana on school grounds, using it in public, smoking it while minors are present, or providing it to anyone under 21 years old. Maintains current prohibitions against driving while impaired. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local governments: Savings of up to several tens of millions of dollars annually to state and local governments on the costs of incarcerating and supervising certain marijuana offenders. Unknown but potentially major tax, fee, and benefit assessment revenues to state and local government related to the production and sale of marijuana products.

Ironically, a ballot to decriminalize marijuana in California in 1972 was also titled Prop 19.

Steely Dan's 1980 hit, "Hey Nineteen" from Gaucho, includes the following lyrics:

The Cuervo Gold
The fine Colombian
Make tonight a wonderful thing.
