Chris Simms-similla: Pot Charge Dismissed in New York PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 02 July 2010 03:33

New York police charged Tennessee Titans quarterback Chris Simms with operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs last June 30. The son of Super Bowl winning QB and former Giant Phil was stopped at a checkpoint on W. Houston St., where "the smell of pot just came off his clothes and out of his car," according to the Daily News. "He was like a zombie."

Chris Simms mug shotNYPD commissioner Ray Kelly added about Simms: "(He) made some statements about the fact that he had smoked marijuana, and that he had smoked all of it. There was no evidence left." Police said Simms was with his pregnant wife Danielle, though Simms' lawyer Nathan Semmel claimed otherwise: "My client never admitted to smoking marijuana that night. He said he was smoking cigarettes that night. (Two other passengers in the car and were) responsible for the marijuana odor."

Update: On May 4, a Manhattan jury found Simms not guilty. His friend Charlie Granatell told the jury that he was smoking weed, not Simms. "I'm mad this happened," the QB said after the decision. "I'm just happy it's all over with."

Drafted in 2003 out of Texas by Tampa Bay, Simms had his best year in 2005. But after he ruptured his spleen, Tampa released him. He signed with Tennessee and Denver, before returning to the Titans as a backup. He didn't play a game in 2010.

CBS Sports football analyst Phil Simms was the MVP of Super Bowl XXI, which the Giants won, 39-20.

While I'm glad he was cleared of the charges, it does bother the heck out of me that he smokes cigarettes. To compound that irresponsible behavior for a pro athlete, he smoked in a car with his pregnant wife and allowed his friend or friends to smoke in the car also. It is a credit to America, that innocent people always have the means to prove so. But someone should talk to young Mr Simms about true responsibility and the actions that will make him a winner in everyday life.
