Brazilian Musician Busted for Maconha PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 05 July 2010 13:29

Ponto de Equilíbrio bassist Pedro Caetano da Silva was arrested on July 1 in Rio de Ouro, south of Rio de Janiero. Police confiscated 18 marijuana plants growing in the reggae musician's backyard (below).

PontodeEquilibrio_thumbDa Silva was charged with trafficking, despite claiming he grows for personal consumption and religious use. The band's lawyer is currently requesting the musician be charged as an user. In Brazil, Art. 28 prohibits imprisonment in cases of growing for private use, which makes the musician's arrest illegal and abusive, according to Growroom.net.

"This is causing a great mobilization in Brazilian reggae fans and cannabis activists," Growroom's Sergio Vidal reports to CelebStoner.

Update: On July 15, da Silva was released from jail.

Maconha is Portuguese for marijuana.
