Caddyshack (1980) PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 25 July 2010 20:19

Harold Ramis' beloved golf farce Caddyshack was released on July 25, 1980. The follow-up to Animal House stars Saturday Night Live vets Chevy Chase and Bill Murray, Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, a sexy character named Lacey Underall and a bunch of pesky gophers. WATCH THE TRAILER BELOW

Caddyshack_posterThe story is pretty simple: Real-estate magnate Al Czervik (Dangerfield) wants to demolish Bushwood Country Club, owned by Judge Snails (Knight). They're at odds throughout the movie. Meanwhile, suave golf pro Ty Webb (Chase) hooks up with Lacey (Cindy Morgan). So does caddy Danny Noonan (Michael O'Keefe) - she's pretty easy.

The movie's stoner appeal lies in Murray's character, groundskeeper Carl Spackler, who when he's not obsessing about the gophers ("my enemy is an animal"), smokes his own strain of weed called "Carl Spackler's Bent."

"This is a cross between Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent and Northern California Sinsemilla," he tells Ty. "The amazing thing about this stuff is you can play holes on it in the afternoon, take it home, and just get stoned to the bejeezus at night on this stuff. I've got pounds of this stuff... I've got a big Bob Marley joint. Here, try this. You're gonna love this. This is dynamite."

Carl lights the bomber and passes it to Ty, who hacks. "It's a little harsh," Carl admits. "Here, cannonball it!"

Carl hands Ty a jug of white wine. They smoke and chase the hits with gulps of wine.

"Cannonball coming, cannonball coming!" Carl yelps.

"That's fine for me," Ty says. "Thanks for the dope."

The cast did it's share of partying during the making of Caddyshack in Fort Lauderdale in 1979. "It was when people didn't have any idea what drugs could do to you," recalls Scott Colomby, who played caddy Tony D'Annunzio.

"Rodney would put a bathrobe on, put a towel around his neck and he'd just get really, really stoned," says John Barmon Jr., who played the Judge's grandson Spaulding. "His eyes would be huge and bloodshot."

Caddyshack is among the 500-plus movies reviewed in "Reefer Movie Madness: The Ultimate Stoner Film Guide" by Shirley Halperin and CelebStoner's Steve Bloom. Order the book here.
