Pot Charge Dropped Against Heat's Haslem PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 16 August 2010 04:00

Arrested for felony marijuana possession on Aug. 15, Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem claimed the weed wasn't his. The charge was dismissed on Sept. 17 with police admitting that the fingerprints on several prescription bottles containing cannabis matched those of passenger Antwain Fleming.

Udonis Haslem mug shotThe stop took place on Gratigny Parkway in North Miami at 3 pm. Haslem was clocked at 78 mph in a 60 mph zone. State troopers smelled weed and called for K-9 support to search Haslem's 2008 Mercedes Benz. According to the arrest report, marijuana was found in three plastic containers under the driver's seat as well as in a blue nylon bag belonging to passenger Antwain Fleming. Haslem was charged with third-degree felony possession of more than 20 grams and papraphernalia. Fleming was charged with first-degree misdemeanor possession of less than 20 grams. Both were taken to Miami-Dade Jail; Haslem was released on bond at 10 pm.

"The passenger in the vehicle admits to law enforcement that this is my marijuana, all of his marijuana, and still for some unknown reason other than probably just Udonis Haslem is a high profile basketball player, Udonis Haslem gets arrested for felony possession of marijuana," says Haslem's lawyer Eric Schwartzreich.

In dismissing the charge against Haslem, the Miami-Dade attorney's office explained: "It took until Sept. 16 to get the results of the print analysis. Thus, while there was probable cause for the arrest of Udonis Haslem (it was in the car driven by Udonis Haslem, the car belonged to Udonis Haslem, the cannabis was in the immediate vicinity of Udonis Haslem, etc.), the state could not prove Udonis Haslem's knowledge or possession of the cannabis beyond a reasonable doubt. And as a result, the state attorney's office will not be able to file charges on this defendant.''

Haslem was the second NBA to be arrested for pot since May (the Knicks' Wilson Chandler was the other).

Miami signed Haslem as a free agent in 2003 and he's been with the team ever since, averaging 10 points and eight rebounds per game in his seven-year career, mostly off the bench. Haslem and Wade are the only remaining players from the Heat's 2005-06 championship season.
