In Nanette Burstein's rom-com Going the Distance, a couple played by Drew Barrymore and Justin Long try to manage a cross-country relationship. But it's drinks and bong hits that get this date movie started. WATCH TRAILER BELOW
Lovers in real life, Barrymore and Long as budding journalist Erin and record company geek Garrett have chemistry to spare. The same day Garrett is dumped he meets Erin at a bar. Back at his place they trade several glass bong hits like pros. (It's the first time Barrymore has toked in a movie role. Long played a stoner in Strange Wilderness.)
While Barrymore lights up the screen, Long is a bland foil. Garrett's juvenile roommates Box (SNL's Jason Sudekis) and Dan (Charlie Day from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and Erin's doting sister Corrine (Christina Applegate) eat up plenty of screen time. But it's all about Erin and Garrett. How will they resolve their desire to be together when they live 3,000 miles apart?
Besides the smoking scene, Barrymore is very convincing acting drunk in another scene. Always a delight, Drew Barrymore doesn't disappoint in Going the Distance.
