A hallucinogenic plant known salvia divinorum, or more simply Mexican mint, apparently set off Miley Cyrus' giggle fit. The herb is legal in California, but only for adults, so was Cyrus breaking the law?
When smoked or eaten, salvia produces a short, intense high. Used by shamans in Mexico for centuries as a replacement for psilocybin mushrooms during religious ceremonies, it has become a popular recreational drug over the last 10 years. This has led to bans in 15 states.
Johns Hopkins is currently studying salvia's uses as an addiction cure, and for pain and for brain disorders such as Alzheimer's and dementia. It targets kappa opioid receptors in the brain.
The study reports that salvia doesn't cause rises in heart rate or blood pressure, and is non-toxic and non-addictive.
However, it may cause you to repeat the phrase, "Oh My God," which Cyrus is heard saying over an over after she smokes a bongful in the widely-seen TMZ video.
