Anthony Bourdain PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 28 April 2011 13:21

Rock & roll chef and bon vivant Anthony Bourdain has hosted the adventure food show No Reservations since 2005 and is the author of 10 books, He partied hard in the '80s and '90s before quitting coke and heroin.

Anthony BourdainIn Kitchen Confidential (2000), Bourdain wrote about his restaurant experiences: "We were high all the time, sneaking off to the walk-in refrigerator at every opportunity to 'conceptualize.' Hardly a decision was made without drugs. Cannabis, methaqualone, cocaine, LSD, psilocybin mushrooms soaked in honey and used to sweeten tea, secobarbital, tuinal, amphetamine, codeine and, increasingly, heroin, which we'd send a Spanish-speaking busboy over to Alphabet City to get in."

Born in New York City on June 25, 1956, Bourdain was raised in New Jersey. He attended Vassar College and the Culinary Institute of America, then began his career as a professional chef. His books Kitchen Confidential and A Cook's Tour (2001) led to a third career in television, first on the Food Network and then the Travel Channel.

Now in its seventh season, No Reservations (Tuesdays at 10 pm EST on the Travel Channel) is a staple for foodies. Bourdain travels all over the world, sampling every imaginable dish. An avowed carnivore, Bourdain has little interest in vegetarian meals. This season he's been to Haiti, Cambodia (where he ate cannabis-infused pizza), Japan (Hokkaido), Brazil (Amazonia), Nicaragua, Boston and the Ozarks.

In Season 2, Bourdain tripped on ayahuasca and chewed coca leaves during a tour of Peru. He regularly makes drug references on No Reservation episodes.

Bourdain is the first chef to be voted a Top CelebStoner. Bong appetit!

I don't think so! The guy never said a word in favor of weed. Always abusing alcohol and cigarettes on TV? Give me a break! The guy is a fake. Not a good stoner to me. And what about his kissing ass with that crap guitar player who wants to be animal killer that eats deer meat? C'mon TONY!!

The Jamaica episode was the best... he was joking about how the FCC won't allow him to show the ganja.

The other famous chef I always pictured doing bong hits behind the camera is Alton Brown. He's never said anything about it on his show, but the guy is a total goof and references Monty Python regularly... :O)

As a Chilean, I can tell you that chewing the coca leaf is no big deal. Unless they're processed, they will not yield cocaine. The natives @ high altitudes use them to deal w/nausea, & also to numb hunger pangs. Tea is even made from the coca leaf, & my dad used to bring it back from Peru when he went on business trips yrs ago. It's good for what ails your tummy.

I love the show. I love his tangents the most. They make this show stand out from all the other corny food and/or travel shows out there. Also, that episode in Cambodia has caused me to want to go there and find that pizza place and order one. =D

Anthony Bourdain is awesome! I really enjoy his perception of the world... and his tangents. I've even caught several Hunter S Thompson references on his show No Reservations. Love it!

R u kidding me? Do you listen to his "tangents"? It's beautifully written poetry. The man's words give me goose bumps. I'm so glad that real expression and not quippy meaningless phases are still welcome on TV.

Hey Tony, I'm an avid cook and food connoisseur, plus I love to travel and work in film/video. I'm ready to join your crew on any adventure! I never miss a show. Your efforts to combine culture, history and food makes for most engaging TV. Keep up the great work! And let me know if you'd like a resume ;)
