Willie Nelson Changes His Tune PDF Print E-mail
Steve Bloom
Wednesday, 18 May 2011 11:37

The Teapot Party began two days after Willie Nelson was arrested for marijuana possession in Texas on Nov. 26. He sent me an email suggesting the need for an alternative to the Tea Party - the "Teapot" Party. I started the Facebook page and and within 48 hours our nascent movement had 30,000 supporters.

Teapot PartyWillie NelsonNelson christened the party with the motto: "We lean a little to the left - tax, it, regulate it, legalize it," of course referring to marijuana. Several months went by and our numbers grew to 50,000. State and local chapters sprung up like weeds across the nation. A group calling themselves the Teapot Party State Administrators wanted more concrete action and soon divorced themselves from the main Teapot Party.

At this point I asked Nelson for more direction. He wrote back: "The purpose of the Teapot Party is to vote in people who believe the way we do, and vote out the ones who don't." With that in mind, we embarked on a campaign to find candidates to support in upcoming elections. Three of our candidates - Doug Linkhart (Denver mayor), Kris Bailey (Austin City Council) and Dana Larson (BC New Democratic Party - have lost their races. We recently endorsed Washington State Rep. Roger Goodman for Congress. We've also endorsed Nelson's longtime friend Gatewood Galbraith (Kentucky governor) and Bill Levin (Indianapolis City Council).

On Tuesday, the Teapot Party announced our biggest endorsement yet - former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson for the Republican presidential nomination. This was done with great thought. Johnson has been courting the marijuana-reform establishment ever since he was governor from 1995 to 2003. With his position in favor of legalizing marijuana as an acting governor, Johnson was clearly blazing a new path. Since he left office, and especially during the last year, Johnson has attended and spoken at numerous marijuana events, including the NORML Conference, MPP Gala, Cypress Hill Smokeout, High Times Medical Cannabis Awards, Seattle Hempfest, Portland Hempstalk and the Austin Marijuana March & Rally.

Ten days ago, Johnson was in Texas for the Austin Rally. That night, he attended Nelson's show in New Braunfels, near San Antonio. I set up a meeting between Johnson and Nelson before the show. I wanted them to get to know each other. If Willie approved of Johnson, we would move ahead and endorse him.

Two days later, I received the following email from Nelson about Johnson: "I think we should endorse him." I informed Johnson's campaign and they happily provided an "acceptance" quote from the Governor: "I am truly gratified to have the endorsement of such an iconic entertainer, philanthropist, innovator and champion for individual rights as Willie Nelson. Not only is he a superstar talent, he is a bold advocate for social change. Americans are demanding the freedom and opportunity to pursue their dreams without interference from a heavy-handed government, and Willie Nelson lends a tremendous voice to those demands."

Yesterday, both the Teapot Party and Gary Johnson 2012 sent out press releases announcing the endorsement. The media immediately jumped on it, with Politico, Fox and Raw Story leading the coverage. We were on a roll.

But not so fast. I sent the press release and coverage links to Nelson. His response took me by surprise: "My position is it too early for me to endorse anyone. And I think every one should vote their  own conscience."

I wrote back reminding him that he had approved the endorsement.

"I know I said that," Nelson replied. "But I think I will wait and see where he stands on other things. My bad. Sorry. I still think he is a good guy but so Is Dennis and if he decided to run I would personally vote for him. If it came down to either him or Gary I'm already committed to Dennis. They both have said they support legal pot."

Willie was referring to Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich, who he supported in 2008 for the Democratic nomination. I defended our choice of Johnson and reminded him that we were only endorsing him for the Republican nomination, which is wide open.

Willie then wrote back: "The Teapot Party is millions of people. It's not me. I jokingly said after I got out of jail in Texas that there is a Tea Party and there should be a Teapot Party. The difference between us is we follow our own drummer. No one can tell us how to think. If we back someone that's us telling them how to vote. I'm not qualified. You can say or do anything you like and I will do the same but let's don't back a political candidate. Let's give our opinions and say what we know about everyone but let's let everyone decide for themselves."

He sent this quote to Linda Banks at stillisstillmoving.com and she posted it Wednesday morning.

So the cat was out of the bag, so to speak. Willie Nelson has changed his tune. "Where do we go from here?" I asked him.

"I still say that the people have the power to change things and they will if they vote," Nelson replied. "The Teapot Party started as a joke but it could still be a way for people to speak out about important things. I am not a criminal. The millions of pot smokers in this country are not criminals. We don't like being treated as such and I for one will stand up for what I believe in and will vote for anyone I choose. You should do the same. We are not ever going to agree on everything and everybody. The best advice I ever got was from my ex father-in-law. He said take my advice and do what you want to. End of story."

And one more email from Nelson, sort of a postscript: "This will blow over and the world moves on. No harm done. We sound like a bunch of pot smokers, that's all... The more I get into politics the more I realize that I am a guitar player."

Over the next few days, Teapot Party coordinators around the country will reassess the party's direction. Where should we go from here? Let us know.

We would just like to clarify one item in this article. At the end of paragraph 2 the article says "A group calling themselves the Teapot Party State Administrators wanted more concrete action and soon divorced themselves from the main Teapot Party."
TPSA was a group of original TPP chapters that united to form a group, as the article states, to take more concrete actions. We did not divorce ourselves from the main TPP, we have always considered ourselves to be in the TPP as a caucus, much like various caucuses within every major party. In fact the main Willie Nelson TPP decided that we were somehow against them and have shunned us ever since. We have consistently voiced our support of all our brother chapters of the Teapot Party and have reached out to representatives of the WNTPP on various occasions only to be rebuffed.

You're all wrong, including the great Willie. Don't get me wrong, I love the guy, but voting for losers will not do nothing good for us smokers of weed. Instead, I would centralize the fight against Obama and Holder and all the crap that is in the WH and will be for at least to 2016. People wake up! Obama screwed all of us and nobody wants to admit it? COME ON! TO THE HELL WITH HIM!!

@davehovland: Thank you for the apology. I suppose I'll forgive you.:) To everyone else: please research your votes! What they say is not always what they mean. I'm still researching. Unless I see someone worthwhile, I'll be voting Green Party again. (And probably watching them lose, again.) You would think people would be more careful with things that affect everyone's lives...

I do not know Mr. Nelson but he seems to live life with a great amount of integrity and he's much more than just a country singer or "stoner." Just because the person leading the Teapot Party page on FB (quite sure this is not Willie Nelson himself) or elsewhere writes something doesn't necessarily make it "all truth" anymore than ANY article composed from one persons' insight only. Did the same articles appear on his fan page, his website or sites we know he is directly involved in? I personally haven't seen it and I'm a paid member of a few of his sites.

When I read the article of explanation on here, it felt almost intrusive to one person's point of view or opinion as to a trail of supposed events or commentary from a portion of emails. Point and blame is real easy to do in any media type arenas, including this one AFTER the fact. Maybe certain protocol should always be followed and make sure all the i's are dotted and the t's crossed!

This is all too bad and somewhat sad but common sense says NO individual would come out swinging towards any one politician this early on especially simply because Johnson may want to "legalize and tax it." It didn't make sense when I first read it, still doesn't make full sense now. I ask your readers to use the truth meter within topped with a bit of common sense; there are always two sides to every story and sometimes three. Yours, his and the truth somewhere in between. As for me? "I lean a bit"...to the quiet one.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Johnson has zero chance to win the Repub nom! Your endorsement should be for Ron Paul!

Once legal, how do we keep it from being "over-regulated?"

I think Mr. Nelson is correct. I too like Johnson but we need to look at the complete stance they take in the final race. Who do we back if Johnson doesn't make it past his party? I know of no other "Republican" that backs legalization like Johnson.

I agree with you both, Steve Bloom. He told you to do what you want! Endorse the candidate, Steve Bloom of the Teapot Party! Willie's close but not there yet even though he kinda did endorse him. I'm backing Ron Paul & Gary Johnson. To each our own. The discussion, activism, members, chapters, email exchanges, media coverage is impressive and the most important part of all this. Cheers for Willie, Steve Bloom, both the candidates mentioned in this article and for all the Teapot Partiers!

Perhaps it was you who jumped the gun by sending a press release stating that Willie was endorsing Gary Johnson, without checking with him first. AND why would you put a personal email conversation in print? You really didn't have the right to send out any press release at all, then you whine about the result... hmmm. I agree with Willie! Sounds like some rookie moves to me, but maybe you just started in journalism or politics and can be forgiven.

The Teapot Party means we all vote our own consciences, and assuming that Gary Johnson is a choice because of one issue, when there is so much is at stake, is just downright silly! Go Willie!!!

You want spin? Here it is: Regarding the Republican primary race, Willie Nelson has endorsed Gary Johnson and in the Democratic race (if he chooses to run), Willie will endorse Dennis K. Problem solved.

I agree with Willie. We have to think for ourselves. I don't trust politicians from either side.

Can't be upset with someone for speaking their mind and thinking for themselves. I support legalization and agree we are not criminals. It does tick me off the way people look at pot smokers, but there are more issues out there than weed.

Dennis may SAY he supports legalizing, but I've never heard of Dennis attending a NORML conference (like Gary). I've never heard of Dennis introducing or supporting any legislation concerning the legalization or decriminalization of cannabis (like Gary). So, as an actual advocate of legalization, I will be voting for Gary Johnson.

We carry on. The Teapot Party doesn't have to endorse any specific candidate. What's important is getting the information ABOUT the candidates out in the public so people will know who supports and who does not; and then, like Mr. Nelson said, we can each vote for whom we feel will best represent us and our interests. If one candidate represents us better than another, then by all means get that info out to us and say: "Hey! Look at this person. This would be an excellent choice!"

It is entirely appropriate to endorse multiple candidates in primary races.

Someone please explain to Willie that he can endorse both. If Kucinich does run (something that is very unlikely) it will be in the Democratic primary. There is no reason that Willie can't say, "If I decide to vote Republican, I'm going to vote for Gary Johnson. If I vote Democrat, I'm going for Kucinich." Then, Willie can decide on a final candidate during the primary election.

It's easier to speak up about who you will NOT support. Number one for me is Obama. He's just another Bush when it comes to cannabis.

Willie is right. All the candidates should be looked at closely, on all the issues. And people should vote their conscience. One of the biggest problems in this country is people not thoroughly investigating candidates, and voting along party lines or on only one issue. Legalization is an important issue, but I look closely at candidates to also see where they stand on women's rights, gay rights, civil rights, taxation and our constitutional rights as well. I don't vote on one issue, and I won't trade legalization for less rights for women or anyone else. So investigate the candidates and make the choice that seems right to you.

Willie doesn't want to tell anyone what to do in any way and I can really respect that. Still, I think his first instinct on Gary Johnson was a sound one - from everything I've seen, this guy is the real deal.

Willie, why don't you take a look at the Green Party? They've got everything you stand for, everything a lot of people believe in, covered.

I'll echo moondog6b9 here: "I think that the Teapot Party should post information on the views of all of the potential candidates in all the parties - and especially highlight clearly which ones support marijuana decriminalization and which ones don't."
In many cases it's impossible to tell who is with us and who is not. Would it be practical to work toward developing a voter guide(s) sort of like the League of Women Voters does that just outlines briefly the platforms of the candidates? No endorsements, just the facts that can be verified.

Why not endorse Ron Paul? He's also for legalization and supports individual liberty. Was the deciding factor only that Gov. Johnson asked for the endorsement? Fact is, Johnson has zero chance of getting the nomination. Ron Paul at least has an outside chance.

I think that the Teapot Party should post information on the views of all of the potential candidates in all the parties - and especially highlight clearly which ones support marijuana decriminalization and which ones don't. As a well-informed voter and patient, I need to know who is progressive regarding MJ reform and who is not.

Right On Willie! As a New Mexican I wholeheartedly supported Governor Johnson but talk about eliminating social security and medicare is making me think twice this time around. 85% of retirees (myself included) depend on social security for 100% of their income. I think a big part of the Teapot Party agenda is to support the common person and not burden him more than he already is. Maybe Gary Johnson will clarify his position on these important issues and earn our support.

I knew Mr. Nelson would not just blast support for anyone who supports legalization. He is a thoughtful (high) person. He will honor his commitment to whomever; we will do the same. Eventually weed will be available easily, safely and plentifully!!! ;-)

hey, willie only did what a real person (not a "celebrity") would do, personally approve of someone but not put his status up on it. i'm beginning to lean towards johnson, BUT he is repub. so i am leery. been burned by both parties in the past, like obama! i should apologize for my part in that.

He admitted he said it but changed his mind. Most politicians would have denied ever approving it and called you a liar. So he goes up in my estimations. And I agree about Dennis Kucinch vs. any Republican. They are out to remove our Constitution piece by piece.

I agree with Willie (his second stance!). I don't think any celebrity deserves (or should be burdened with) the endorsement of political figures. I think it's great that this article caught my eye and helped me see who IS doing some good work. Frankly, I see an endorsement from an organization so edgy as a potential albatross around the neck. Yes, let's talk about the candidates and their stances. I call my Congresscritters and Senate folks often about this and many other issues. It's important to MEET politicians and be professional about it to give the best information and not be given the brush-off. Take care, everyone. Peace!

"If we back someone that's us telling them how to vote," says Willie. Well in many ways, esp with potheads, that's probably true. I agree we must make sure of all of the candidates' positions before we endorse them.

Sounds like Willie has his head on right. He may have made you look bad, but his logic is spot on!
