RIP: Gil Scott-Heron PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 28 May 2011 20:55

Gil Scott-HeronThe passing of Gil Scott-Heron on May 27 is sad in so many ways. The great jazz poet of the '70s and '80s suffered from crack addiction, which landed him in jail several times. Despite being his generation's Chuck D, few of today's music fans know about Scott-Heron. Now, with his death at 62, perhaps they will.

Steve Bloom Remembers Gil Scott-Heron

Here are two versions of "The Bottle" (the original from 1974 and live 20 years later at Woodstock '94) and "Winter in America" (1974 album title track).

Since so many artists have had and continue to have unpublicized drug issues, out of respect, I think we need to leave Gil alone. It has no bearing on his early major works and it's disrespectful. You should rewrite your bio, as jail and crack did not dictate his entire life. We should focus on his message, as he can no longer speak for himself. His listeners should get the word out - let's remember the music, please! Allow our brother to rest in peace!
