Ethan Nadelmann: 'Pot Is the New Gay' PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 09 July 2011 00:29

Speaking on Real Time with Bill Maher, Drug Policy Alliance executive director Ethan Nadelmann professed that politically, "Pot is the new gay. There's a lot of wind at our backs, but victory is not inevitable."

Ethan NadelmannNadelmann praised and damned the Obama administration: "The first 18 months I felt fairly good about him on the drug issue... but since that time it's like the drug czar's office has been captured by the old anti-drug crazies of the past two administrations. Like they just did about medical marijuana - now they say they are going after people again, so I'm very pessimistic."

When Nadelmann coughed, Maher seized the moment, joking, "Oh boy, that stuff stays in your lungs."

"I think it was the outdoor stuff," Nadelmann grinned.

Pot is the new gay?
What a ridiculous analogy.
I think Ethan needs to take time out for a couple more bong rips and come up with something better.

Read "Marijuana Gateway to Health: How Cannabis Protects Us from Cancer and Alzheimer's Disease" - on sale in August. This book tells you what the government doesn't want you to know about marijuana.

The president most certainly can choose whether to enforce prohibition. He is the chief executive. I agree with you Wes - Obama is just as bad as the Republicans when it comes to pot. It's funny that for someone who ran on change, he doesn't believe in the rights of the individual when it would mean him losing votes to take a stand (pot, gay marriage, etc). I guess at least he doesn't pretend to be for small government like the Republicans.

If you have a govt that will lie about a weed, what else are they not telling the truth about?

Obama could stop the DEA from doing anything if he wanted to, but he is worthless on the pot issue, no different from Bush. He only cares about getting re-elected, so he will say something that makes him sound better on this issue, whereas Bush never did. But on actual policy he is no different than Bush. Anyone who is for legalization should not vote to re-elect him. Go 3rd party unless Ron Paul or Gary Johnson get the Repub nomination...

The DEA employs a lot of people and keeps a number of industries going. Many would lose employment if this bureaucracy was eliminated. That's a major hurdle politically

I don't know to what extent Obama can legally stop the DEA from doing its job. I don't think he really can. Jimmy Carter was openly for legalization, and he couldn't get it done or change any policy.

Is the timing of the defeat of Prop 19 in Cali and the about turn of Feds 18 months ago a coincidence? I think NOT
