Astros outfielder Jordan Schafer is used to catching flies. On Oct. 4, he was caught smoking pot.
At a traffic light at Columbus Dr. and Glen Ave., Tampa police in an unmarked car smelled marijuana coming from Schafer's Range Rover and saw him puffing a blunt at 12:30 am.
The former Brave had 25 grams stashed in the console and was charged with felony possession of marijuana. He was taken to Orient Road Jail and released on $2,000 bail several hours later. The police also seized the Land Rover. In Florida, possession of more then 20 grams is a felony.
Schafer grew up in Winter Haven and currently lives in Haines City, about 80 miles east of Tampa. He was drafted by Atlanta in 2005, but before ever playing a major league game, Schafer received a 50-game suspension for using HGH in 2008. A year later, the speedy centerfielder knocked a home run in his first-ever big-league at-bat. After hitting just .204 in his rookie season, he spent 2010 in the minors. The Braves promoted Schafer again this past season, but then traded him to Houston in July. He batted .242 in 2011.
