Starters Tyrann Matthieu and Spencer Ware suited up for LSU's 9-6 overtime victory over Alabama (8-1) Saturday night after serving one-game suspensions. Both players, plus Tharold Simon, were suspended for testing positive for K2/Spice.  LSU (9-0) play Western Kentucky, Ole Miss and Arkansas before the SEC championship game on Dec. 3.

LSU TigersIt's the first time any athletes, amateur or professional, have failed a drug test for synthetic cannabinoids. "It's an epidemic," a campus source tells ESPN. "It's not just here, it's everywhere. It's scary because the kids don't know anything about it. It's a student-body issue, not just a student-athlete issue."

Synthetic cannabinoids were added to the NCAA's list of banned "street drugs" in August. However, the NCAA doesn't test for K2 and Spice.

"Schools can determine whether they test for something," sats the NCAA's Mary Wilfert. "It's independent of NCAA testing. NCAA testing does not test for [synthetic cannabinoids]. I know some schools are testing for it. What the penalties are is up to the school."

All three players are sophomores. CB Matthieu is a Hesiman Trophy candidate and RB Ware leads the team in rushing. CB Simon comes off the bench. Minus the threes players, LSU defeated Auburn on Oct. 22.

I agree. Make it legal for all over 21. Give Americans back some freedom for recreational activities.

So if these synthetics are such a massive epidemic and are so much more dangerous than actual cannabis, then why would schools make students feel pressured to find alternative and much more dangerous ways of getting high? Don't cop out and say that they shouldn't do it at all. Kids will be kids and smoking marijuana is something that kids will continue to do until the end of time. Since marijuana hasn't harmed a single life in its entire 7,000 years of recorded use and poses no threat to society other than spiked sales in junk food, then why teach our children that something as harmless as marijuana use is just as deadly as shooting up heroin? Marijuana prohibition started due to racism toward Mexicans. So by telling your kids that something as simple a plant is wrong ONLY because it is illegal, you are telling them that racism and terrorism is acceptable.
