The little stoner movie that could - We Are the Hartmans - is currently screening at rock clubs around New York. It's about a bar that receives an eviction notice and the efforts to save it.
Hospitalized aging hippie Hartman (played by Richard Chamberlain) takes bong hits while his daughters fight over the future of Hartman's, a small-town bar/rock club with a kookie clientele.
“It was blast to play a Willie Nelson-type of character," says Chamberlain, who's best known for his roles in The Thorn Birds, Julius Caesar and Dr. Kildare over his long, illustrious career.
Another stoner angle in Laura Newman's We Are the Hartmans is Ben Curtis. His character Jordan leads the charge to save the bar and in the process wins over Hartman's free-spirited daughter Diana (Jennifer Restivo). They've carried that relationship over into real life.
Curtis (below right) appeared in the famous Dell TV ads as "The Dell Dude." In 2003, he was arrested for marijuana possession in New York.
