Thursday, 10 November 2011 13:15

The 4-8 Carolina Panthers cut several players on Nov. 8, including rookie linebacker Lawrence Wilson, who was charged with marijuana possession on Nov. 2. A sixth-round draft pick out of Connecticut, Wilson played on the team's practice squad.

Lawrence WilsonDriving north on 1-85 near Salisbury, North Carolina, Wilson was stopped for speeding (76 mph). Rowan County police smelled pot and a search produced 11 grams (Wilson says it was closer to two). Six days later, Panthers GM Marty Hurney sent Wilson packing, stating: "We don't want anyone's personal conduct reflecting poorly on the club."

Marijuana is decriminalized in North Carolina. According to NORML, "Possession of one half ounce or less is punishable by up to 30 days in jail, most likely suspended."

Wilson was the seventh active NFL player to be arrested for drug possession in 2011. The others are Kenny Britt, Javaris James, Johnny Jolly, Laurence Maroney and Alex Magee. Check out the All-NFL Drug Bust Team.

Maybe if he tortured animals to death in an illegal dog-fighting organization, he might still be playing pro football.
