What happens to one's ideals when you buy into the corporate life? Joshua Leonard's The Lie, adapted from a T.C. Boyle story, poses this question. Watch the trailer below Leonard also plays Lonnie, the lead character who treats anxiety with medical marijuana. He's bummed about his menial job and even more concerned when he learns his wife Clover (Jess Weixler) is being recruited by a pharmaceutical company. They have a new daughter and are barely getting by.So Lonnie starts skipping work, mostly to hang out with Tank (Mark Webber, right), his stoner bud who lives in an RV by the Pacific Ocean. Pressured by Radko (Gerry Bednob), his boss, Lonnie makes up a major fib. Lonnie's charade dominates the third act, culminating in a huge blow-up with Clover. Marijuana aficionados will particularly enjoy when Lonnie goes to the Lakesdie dispensary and quickly becomes enamored with the budtender (Kelli Garner). She recommends Headband and they have a sesh in a realistic-looking grow room in the back. In an earlier scene, Lonnie and Tank trade bong hits out of a dated purple acrylic (why not glass?). Leonard's sensitive performance channels Philip Seymour Hoffman and Weixler cackles like Winona Ryder when they're having sex. She's the film's emotional glue; her reactions to Lonnie's confession are stark and riveting. Webber continues his run of offbeat characters. Bearded and pushing a holistic product line called Face Food, Tank provides Lonnie with a reality check just when he needs one. As Webber hits the bong you understand why High Times put him on the cover in 2004. The Lie is currently playing at the Village East in New York.
