I agree 100% that Alex Lifeson should be at - if not near - the top. Think about it. Here's a guy in a band with Neil Peart and Geddy Lee who are each considered to be at the top of their fields in their respective instruments, and for over 35 years, Alex has not just kept up with them, adding exactly what each song needs from the guitar, but he's developed his own distinctive style and tone - and he does it without gimmicky tricks, instead using his own virtuoso talent. His being as underrated as he is is just a crime against music.

Alex Lifeson should be 1st not 98 IMO. He has played and recorded most of the other guys stuff, and has blown the original guitarists away (all while having his own tone like no other). Have a listen to Rush's album Feedback where they redo many of the oldies of Clapton Townshend, etc. Now don't get me wrong, I love them all. I am just tired of seeing Alex being so underated when the others are way too overrated. I mean, I cant even hear Clapton play on most of his songs? Plus, when he played in Toronto with Jeff beck, I could not hear him play there either. Jeff Beck blew his socks off. Beck has recently become a top 10 for me. Andy Summers should be a close 2nd IMO as well. I am also tired of seeing Hendrix as #1. Stevie Ray Vaughan can play Hendrix songs at least 10 times better than he ever could. Mind you he did not write them. I guess Rolling Stone must have used a list of non-musicians here. People are such Sheep!
Agree Disagree.

Interesting to see Joey Ramone come in at number 28. Particularly so since he was the band's lead singer and didn't play an instrument.

Jimi Hendrix should not be in Top 10. Ritchie Blackmore totally outplays him in every aspect, as do many others. Where are Gary Moore and Yngwie Malmsteen? Meaningless commercial media-produced list by people who who have no understanding of rock/blues music.

I'm over 50 y/o and have been playing most of my life. When I see these top guitar player lists like this the first guy I look for is Alvin Lee. I'm not saying he put out as many hits as some, but come on half of this list couldn't even jam with Lee! If you want to put up a list like this(player/hitmaker) then John Fogerty should be right up there with Keef.

What about Lonnie Mack?

If you want to know why this list is broken, stupid and just wrong, look for JJ Cale. He's not there. Ask Mark Knopfler and Eric Clapton if JJ Cale should be on that list, near the top.

That list is silly. Les Paul and Chet Atkins should be in the top 5. Steve Vai is one of the most important and interesting things to ever happen to electric guitar and he gets no mention. Keith Richards above Jeff Beck? Ha ha!! Really? I agree with the "glaring omissions" and would add Brad Paisley, Red Volkert, Brent Mason and Mike Keneally. Oh well, it's a pretty meaningless list....

What about Alex Lifeson? You have about 40 or more on there that don't even belong. It's kind of hard to give credence to any supposed greatest guitarists that has Keith Richards and Chuck Berry higher than Stevie Ray Vaughan and Randy Rhodes 36th. Maybe you should delete the whole list, listen to albums by each of them and start all over. Unless you just like to pick names at random, then by all means let us know to not bother to read any more lists.

well, at least this one's peer reviewed, and I gotta say, commercial success largely determines one's placement on the list.
