This may already be obvious to anyone who likes to exercise and smoke weed, or even to folks who enjoy the still-strong voice of Willie Nelson, but one of the most extensive studies ever done on steady marijuana usage concludes that pot doesn't harm your lungs.
That's the major finding of the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study by a team of doctors and academics at the University of California, San Francisco which lasted from 1985 to 2006 and included 5,115 men and women in four U.S. cities. Check out the the study results here. The bottom line is that smoking one joint a day won't cause lung damage. In some cases, lung function actually improved - perhaps because some of the active ingredients in cannabis, such as THC, have anti-inflammatory properties. Another theory is that stoners may strengthen their lungs by taking deep breaths when they smoke. The doctors, however, reported that "heavier" marijuana use (up to 10 joints or pipe fulls a day) could accelerate a decline in pulmonary function. Moderation is the key, at least according to this study - moderation within reason, of course.
