Jennifer Aniston in 'Wanderlust' PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 24 February 2012 01:33

David Wain's Wanderlust is Jennifer Aniston's stoner coming-out party. Long rumored to enjoy marijuana, Aniston gleefully portrays the conflicted Linda, who smokes pot and drinks ayahuasca, in the this film about a bourgeois couple that joins a commune.

WanderlustLinda and George (Paul Rudd) decide they can't afford to live in New York and head South to stay with George's boorish brother (Ken Marino). That doesn't work, so they stop at what they think is a bed and breakfast called Elysium. Not quite. Naked, blissed-out hippies run the place. Watch the trailer below

Alpha male Seth (Justin Theroux) quickly shows interest in Linda. She's flattered by his quick-fingered guitar moves as George grows increasingly uncomfortable. But since it was George's idea to give the commune a fling, he has to go along with the free-love philosophy. Eva (Malin Akerman) offers herself to George, prompting a classic dose of Paul Rudd doubt and insecurity.

Jennifer Aniston - WanderlustMore fun is the ayahuasca trip. Everyone gathers in a circle and drinks the jungle juice. How the commune based in Georgia acquired the concoction is never explained. Linda climbs a tree and leans over a large branch, repeating, "I believe I can fly." When she does leap, Seth's there to catch (and rescue) her.

Full of righteous indignation and new-age blather, Seth's not quite what he seems. Nor is commune elder Carvin (Alan Alda), who sneaks into town and wolfs down a plate of meat once a week. Land speculators want the property to build a casino on. Only a breast-baring (well almost) stunt by Linda saves the day.

Wain's slapstick is similar to the broad strokes of his other camp-out movie, Wet Hot American Summer. The cast includes several comics, including Jessica St. Clair, Todd Barry and Michael Ian Black, as well as Lauren Ambrose, Kathyrn Hahn and Michaela Watkins.

While Aniston's Linda drinks the Kool-Aid and has a good-old-fashioned romp, Rudd's George struggles mightily to fit in. Had Rudd brought his Idiot Brother character Ned along, George might have fared better. He's uptight to a fault. No wonder Linda almost falls for Seth. (Theroux, by the way, is her real-life boyfriend.)

Now 43, Aniston is letting her hair down and taking on more daring roles (see last year's raunchy Horrible Bosses). Maybe she's building towards her one great Oscar performance. Wanderlust is a big step in that direction.
