America's greatest counterculture writer, Hunter S. Thompson, left us six years ago, but he's hardly forgotten. Thompson was the subject of the 2008 documentary, "Gonzo," and his 1998 book, "The Rum Diary," is now a movie starring Johnny Depp.

Affectionately known as the "Hemperor," Jack Herer was one of America's foremost marijuana activists. The author of "The Emperor Wears No Clothes" - about the government conspiracy behind cannabis prohibition - Herer preached his message that hemp can save the world until he passed away in April.

Born 60 years ago on Aug. 4, Louis Armstrong was a lifelong "gage" smoker, the first celebrity arrested for marijuana (in 1931) and encouraged Pres. Dwight Eisenhower to legalize it in the '50s. Armstrong joins CelebStoner Legends Bob Marley, Jerry Garcia, Peter Tosh and George Carlin.

One of America's great and most enduring performers, veteran standup comic George Carlin passed away on June 22, 2008 from a heart attack. He'd recently appeared in his 14th HBO special. Like Richard Pryor and Lenny Bruce, Carlin was known for riffing on drugs, as he did in his classic 1973 bit, "Grass Swept the Neighborhood."

On Sept. 11, 1987, reggae great Peter Tosh - best known for "Legalize It" (the greatest marijuana song of all time) - was gunned down in Jamaica. He was 42 years old.
