Barack Obama on drugs: 'Junkie. Pothead. That's where I'd been heading' Print E-mail

Barack Obama is certainly not the first presidential candidate to admit he inhaled marijuana, but he is the first to admit using cocaine. The Democratic senator from Illinois experimented with drugs during his high school years in Hawaii in the '70s and as a college student at Occidental College and Columbia University. He also experienced the drug war firsthand when a friend of his was busted for weed. How will this influence Obama's platform on illegal drugs?Obama

Obama wrote about these experiences in his first book, Dreams from My Father, in 1995. Here's an excerpt from the book:

"I blew a few smoke rings, remembering those years. Pot had helped, and booze; maybe a little blow when you could afford it. Not smack, though - Mickey, my potential initiator, had been just a little too eager for me to go through with that. Said he could do it blindfolded, but he was shaking like a faulty engine when he said it...

"Junkie. Pothead. That's where I'd been headed; the final fatal role of the would-be black man. Except the highs hadn't been about that, me trying to prove what a down brother I was. Not by then, anyway. I got high for just the opposite effect, something that could push questions of who I was out of my mind. Something that could flatten out the landscape of my heart, blur the edges of my memory.

"I had discovered that it didn't make any difference whether you smoked reefer in a white classmate's sparkling new van, or in the dorm room of some brother you'd met down at the gym, or on the beach with a couple of Hawaiian kids... You just might be bored or alone. Everybody was welcome into the club of disaffection.

"And if the high didn't solve whatever it was that was getting you down, it could at least help you laugh at the world's ongoing folly and see through all the hypocrisy and bullshit and cheap moralism. That's how it seemed to me then, anyway."

He then relates the story of Pablo, who didn't have "his driver's licence that day [when] a cop with nothing better to do check[ed] the trunk of his car... One day [my mother] marched into my room wanting to know the details of Pablo's arrest. I told her not to worry, I wouldn't do anything that stupid.

"'Don't you think you're being a little casual about your future?' she said. 'One of your friends just got arrested for drug possession. Your grades are slipping..."

"I didn't want to hear about this..."

Obama/Osama
written by CuseThinker , June 08, 2007

Wake & Baker makes a point about Obama being too close in name to Osama, but I think that is perfect, considering to duality of man...He is the perfect foil to Osama, and I think the whole pot thing could help Osama respect America again...I don't agree with what Osama did on 9/11, but I dig his beef with America...Have you ever sat back and thought about what America is really all about? Making money and having everybody love you...that is what is at the core of American values. And that is total bullshit. America's moral views suck. We say we're a nation of God and Jesus, but we treat other people like shit, even the poor people we try to help, because we treat them like savages who don't know wrong from right, so let's civilize them, that'll make them happy. Yeah, a lot of good civilization has done us. We don't really care about helping other people, all we care about is people telling us about what a great person we are for helping other people live the fake life we now possess in America. Personally, I hate American society. It's filled with lies, facades, and general bullshit, from the top down. If you only understand one thing about life, understand that it is not about making money, and in fact money is one of the worst things you can have, and it is the worst thing to desire. "Moralistic" people in this country want to take down pornography and things of that nature because it breeds lust, but what they don't realize is that love of money and lust after money is far more dangerous than love of pronography and love of sex. By the way, the church is bullshit. God is real, but the church is fake. Humans created the church. Instead of going to church next Sunday to "worship" God, why don't you go to the park or the nearest nature walk or into the woods in your back yard...do something to enjoy the day...Enjoy God's world and all his natural creations. First, it will hwlp you understand the true nature and meaning of God, and second, that will help you get into Heaven (whatever that is) along with treating other people right, NOT by giving a lot of money to the church or never missing a sermon or whatever. PEACE.

Politics
written by lucid , January 31, 2007

If he's smart, he won't mention anything about it until after he's elected. It's not about right or wrong. It's about getting elected so he can do something about it. We all know the war on drugs is bullshit and does way more harm than good but politics is politics. Get elected first then do something about it.

obama...way too much like osama
written by Wake&Baker , January 30, 2007

Obama is a great candidate for the US Presidential election but Obama rhymes way too much like Osam for him to be the pres.

Is Barack Obama the Real Deal?
written by Gwen , January 26, 2007

What an interesting point to bring up about Senator Obama (this is my first entre into your blog) and I'll take your last statement one step further... Is Barack willing to let himself be viewed as potentially "imperfect" in the voter's eyes? If so, then there's a chance that he'll support the rights of marijuana smokers out there.

For a different read on the "imperfections" of Barack Obama, I just wrote an article at http://thumbprint.typepad.com/wabisabiatworkplay/

Good luck to all!
