Mike Gravel wants to legalize pot and sell it in liquors stores.
The former Alaska senator is a long-shot at best to win the Democratic presidential primary in 2008. But it's refreshing to hear at least one candidate embrace the marijuana issue, rather than running scared for fear of being tagged as "soft on drugs."
NORML Audio Stash interviewed Gravel on June 12. In response to Chris Goldstein's probing questions about his pro-pot stance, Gravel had this to say:
• "Our whole drug policy is insane."
• "We should totally decriminalize marijuana - make it as legal as alcohol."
• "A fifth of booze will do 100 times more damage than a similar amount of marijuana would do. In fact, it's generally known that there are healing qualities to the use of marijuana."
• "There have been studies that show that there's no trace of proving that the use of cannabis leads to addiction to har drugs."
• "A two-martini lunch doesn't lead to alcoholism any more than smoking or enjoying marijuana, whether it's in brownies or other forms."
